HI, I have an old A208 and it has worked great for me for a very long time but just today it has started acting up. It starts the spin cycle (tub full of water) and then stops immediately. I checked the belts and they are there but seem old and loose. If the belts were the problem would the motor stop turning anyways. The pump is also stiff to turn by hand, is this normal. I really need some help please. I don't want to buy a new disposable washing mashine.

stiff pump

the stiff pump is not normal and is likely the cause of the
trouble-also on a maytag the main drive belt to the tranny
pulley is a special type meant to slip on the motor pulley
if the belt is faulty or the wrong type, the motor can overload
trying to get the tub up to speed in spin.
if the pump bushing is not badly worn and is just gummed up
you might be able to oil it up and get it turning free again
-older pumps have a screw on the side of the bushing area
that can be removed to add oil.

Yeah, lube the pump with turbine oil before spending money and time on anything else. I pop out the screw (the screw is staring at you when looking at the pump at eye level) and squirt some turbine oil while the machine is in the spin cycle. Squeeze the oil in there slowly or it will ooze out and find its way to the pump belt.

If the belts are really old or worn, they will grip instead of slip, causing the motor cycle the protection circuit.
