Maytag A606 agitator removal

Not sure how to get the agitator off. There is a small 1/8" hole in the base of the agitator but. I am not sure if it takes a special tool or maybe an allen or hex drive and if so what size? If anyone can give me some advice I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

Run the washer with very hot water for 5 minutes then give the agitator a good pull and usually they come right off.

You mean they aren't attached to the agitator post in any way? Amazing that they don't float with the clothes!

Todd, there are a few manufacturers that don't bolt them down. Maytag didn't and GE/Hotpoint didn't either.

That agitator is held on by a rubber ring known as the wedding band,the 12 series and later machines have a set screw.

When I got my Maytag A606 the agitator had not been removed in a long time and it was really stuck on. I removed it without damage by threading clothesline through the middle of the agitator, then I attached the clothesline to a slidehammer, laid the machine on it's side, and hammered it off. Now I take it off once in a while to clean under it and it pulls right off.
