I was wondering which of the following agitators can be directly swapped with one another.

Black (assuming snap on)

Turquoise (snap on)

Turquoise with 1/4" side screw

I may be able to get a hold of a new NOS black agitator and wanted to try it out since it is claimed to have a more effective filter design.

As long as the capacities are compatible, you should be able to interchange. You might have to put on a black keeper ring to hold the agitator on. I've actually put a keeper ring on with the agitators that have the set screw to snug them up...

That being said, if you are trying to put a 'filter in the middle' agitator on a orbital transmission, the lint filter may not work correctly due to the quicker, shorter stroke...

Dan,
All the above agitators you mention are interchangeable, provided the machine has the old style helical drive transmission, and the agitator is for the proper tub size. The black agitators were for the smaller tub machines, with three vertical holes in the filter barrel. The turquoise ones were made for large and small tub machines. The large tub agitators had four vertical holes in the barrel. I think the more efficient agitators you are mentioning were the original black Bakelite agitators, with a removeable shroud on the bottom. Be careful, as you might be getting a newer black poly agitator. These are exactly the same as the turquoise, only black in color.

Thank you very much gentleman!!

It appears that I'm getting my load capacities mixed up. I'm familiar with Maytags from 1966 to 1986, but before that, things get sketchy.

Great info!

Do you happen to have a part # for the keeper ring? I stared at my microfiche films for nearly an hour and couldn't find any reference or part #.

My large capacity turquoise agitator is beginning to develop a lot of "play" in it. I assumed it was from worn splines, which it very well could be. The keeper ring is a nice alternative to keep it going a little while longer.

So, which models had the large capacity black agitators? I've never seen one in an 806.

Which model(s) had this agitator? I'm assuming it was used in the smaller capacity washers.

Thanks in advance!
