maytag brake

heres a question i have a 61 maytag and im not sure if either the motor is weak or the brake assy is sticking? when its time to spin out sometimes its fine and sometimes its like the brake is stuck.. when this happens you can either let the motor hum till it kicks in or move the tub a bit by hand or reach under and yank on the belt.. it feels like the brake is stuck a bit.. im leaning towards a bad brake assy.. any ideas

On mom's 65, the belt became stretched eventually and the springs holding the platform the motor is mounted to became weak/stretched. As a result the motor platform would not be pulled in enough to tighten the belt to transfer motion to the tranny and pump.

Did you mean hum till the motor kicks "out"?

I replaced those little rollers and springs under the motor of my '64 Highlander. It cut down on vibration within the cabinet, but did not seem to effect the ability to spin----although I see what you are saying. Yeah, it sounds like things are hanging up somewhere, you would think if the brake was dragging there would be some kind of smell comming from it. Maybe it is just in the process of locking up completely. Greg Nunn would be a good one to ask.

Motor hums (not turning) or is running and slipping on the drive belt? Check on the motor carriage rollers/slides and belts to be sure it's all good.

How does the top stop when it does spin and the timer is pushed in to stop the machine or at the end of spin cycle? It is very fast to stop or takes a few seconds?

If it is the brake, remember there is a spring in the brake package that is compressed under 200lbs of pressure - do not disassemble the brake package until you have taken precautions to not remove your head at the same time. A large bolt and nut or the whole package placed in a vise to gradually release the pressure. I'm thinking you won't even have to do that, the brake package might still be available.

gonna try a brake

well i can still get a brake assy. so im gonna try that. the rollers on the motor slid are fine and the tension springs on the slide are fine and the belts are fine and i think the motor is fine, but even if the belts are off and you place your hand on the large pulley that is on the bottom of the brake and turn it by hand sometimes it gets stuck and you have to really give it a good yank to let it turn. im talking about in the spin direction for the agi direction everything is fine. something inside the brake must be stuck. so well find out in a week when the new part gets here

We had an 806 that smoked a few belts when trying to spin.I was thinking the brake was hanging up,but my Dad tore into it,and found a shaft in the transmission that was binding up,because of a bad bearing.Sump'thin else to think about.
