Maytag IntelliSense rides again!

Well, I decided to pick up that DWU9962. I got it for a very air price too, especially since as I started to tear down the machine, I had my work cut out for me. First thing I did when I got it home was check the serial number and compare it to the recall list on the MT website. Turns out, the serial ends in SH, which happens to be a model that isn't affected by the recal!

Here is a picture of the machine, the touch pad has started to peel away just below the vent, and some of the paint has separated too. There is also a small hairline crack on the Smart Start button. The dishwasher is quite dirty on the panels, and it looks like someone was painting, and painted right over the dishwasher is some spots, I'll post a picture of that later.

Here is the inside after the racks have been removed. The person I bought it from said every once and a while the dishwasher will alert you of a blocked wash arm. "Oh, here we go, electronics issues" I thought to myself... I turned the spray arm with my hand, and there was a lot of resistance, so I knew there must have been something caught in either the backwash arm, or something gummed up in the spray arm.

Well it turns out I was right, there was a lot of junk gummed up in the backwash arm. Not to mention, when I took the discharge housing off, there was a huge, long, gross piece of plastic stuck in the wash impeller. Awesome.

I did a complete tear down of the pump assembly with the exception of the drain impeller. More crap was found in the bottom of the sump here. Milk container safety seals, screw, a lobster claw, more plastic, staple, glass, and a wall mount for a portrait? I wish people took good care of their appliances like we do... But then again, I wouldn't have fun doing this.

You can also see the IntelliSense computer too. I'm thinking I might get a new, clean pump assembly as this will be my daily driver.

Even though this dishwasher, according to MT, was unaffected by the recall, I still was slightly uneasy about the wiring harness. When I took the door apart, It looked as if the RA dispenser did leak, and that there was some residue on the wires and door. So I washed with water and a cloth the wires going to the RA dispenser, and quickly dried them. I took my eyeloupe and looked over all the wires for cracks, burns, and decay. Looked clean!

So while working one day, I talked to an avionics mechanic at work about the DW and the recall and told him about it, and that my solution to the problem after washing and inspecting the wires was to seal them with electrical tape or heat shrink. He suggested it was a good idea, just to be sure. Even though the machine isn't affected, It's a little piece of mind. So I individually taped each wire in the harness, and then taped off the main wire harness from the area.

I put all the racks in, and tested the machine with no water. Excellent success, I then poured in hot water and let it sit to see if there were any leaks, none, then fired the machine up, no leaks. I wasn't expecting any, but you can never be sure. I am going to repair the racks though with the touch up stuff, some of the tines at the bottom are starting to get a bit ripe. I often notice how MT DWs from this era have racks that seem to disintegrate over time.

Alas, the machine is finished and in working order! I fixed the touch pad by painting the inside white where the paint had separated, and then painting over the white with black so the back lighting won't shine through. I then used some adhesive to adhere the touch pad back on, and it worked! However, if anyone has a touch pad or control panel they aren't using, I will pay a cash reward! I called a few appliance parts places, and they all said "FSP/Whirlpool/Maytag doesn't make that anymore, its unavailable." Crap, I really really really want a new touch pad.

On another note, I found the wiring diagram, which on the back had a set of instructions on how to enter various service modes on the dishwasher. Using a combination of certain buttons, you can have the machine do a self test, manually open and close the relays, and have the machine do a check for faults! Holy! Smart! I will be copying it into a word document, so if anyone wants it, just shoot me an email and I will send it to you.

Brilliant Restoration

I have never had a less than wonderful Maytag dishwasher experience and would take anyone of them back in a heart beat.  I understand the yen for cosmetic perfection and hope the hunt for a new face goes well.  You'll enjoy the clean dishes and even though the restoration was a pain in the neck it remains a good value to say nothing of letting us all see the naked shots of an Intelliclean with it's pants removed.

Another rare survivor...

Happy day! I'm so jazzed she survived! You have a wonderful dishwasher there. Now I'm going to have to look deep in my garage because if memory serves me, I *might* have a few parts for this one left over from when I had mine and wanted extra parts... I don't know if I still have them but at one time I had extra control boards, motor/pump assys and maybe a spare console... I'll look here in the next few days...

Aren't those diagnostic routines a blast? Did you know that the blocked washarm sensing works by reading a magnet that's hidden in one arm of that four armed filter backwash piece that had the blocked slits? It actually reads the rpm of the washarm and screams if it's not in range.

I was a little curious as to why there was magnets in the backwash arm, I thought it could have been to collect metal filings or something. But then I figured it was probably for the blocked wash arm sensor. Do the GE Potscrubber 2800's work on the same principal to detect wash arm blockages?

I had too much fun with the "easter eggs"/diagnostic routines for the computer, all I need to do is a little repair on the racks. I was going to try and see if a decal/graphics/sign making place could make a brand new touch pad haha, I am so hellbent on a new touch pad. That would be excellent, I would be super grateful till the end of time if you had some extra parts! Keep me in the loop! Thanks!

I cleaned out the lower arm and tower on my MDC4000. Do you know how to remove the upper arm? I cannot figure it out.

Get ready to cringe...

That upper sprayarm attaches to the roof with a snap on clip affair. You will most likely cringe as you do it but pull gently but firmly on the sprayarm and it will detach itself... Of course, the retainer IS plastic but I usually don't have issues with it...
