Maytag Neptune Tub Bearing Removal and Changeout

I have installed 6 outer tubs for Neptunes and have heard of the Tony Tool for bearing removal and install but it is pricy @ $379.00. Any suggestions for removal and changeout? I see Neptune washers on Ebay frequently that are sold for this issue. Oh, also outer tubs now retail for $425.00 making this repair no longer cost effective.

I scrapped two Neptune MAH 4500's for that very problem. I thought about taking one apart, and trying a bearing replacement, but then you have to worry about if the electronics would go next.

But even though my name is Neptune I wish I could be more encouraging. The Neptune we have is noisy, probably the bearing is shot, it leaks, and I am afraid this machine has som many problems people are not bothering to replace the bearing. It's not that we aren't interested in technical issues, it is just that the washers of the past have a lot more material to be more repairable. It is sad, I thought I was buying the best washer on Earth at the time. Are you in the appliance repair business? Even so, 379 is a lot of money for a tool you may use only a few times in a career. It is really sad what has happened. I would say try www.repairclinic.com, but that is probably where you found the 425 tub.

Actually I'm interested in the "Tony Tool" you mention that extracts Neptune bearings.

My 7500 is still going strong after about seven years. Of course it had major repairs in its third year of service, but since then it hasn't had any mechanical problems. Knock on powder coat.

Speaking of which, there is a growing spot of rust under the detergent dispenser cover. You can't see it unless you remove the cover frame, but it stems from insufficient coating of the base steel at the edges. Maytag told me that rust is not covered by the extended warranty, so at some point I will have to remove the top panel and apply (more) anti-rust treatment - before the spot grows too big.

I noticed it had grown a bit when I saw flakes of rust fall into the dispenser.

Other than that, no problems with the Neptune.

I am in the appliance repair business. I had a friend punch out the bearings with a slide hammer and I bought new Roller bearings. I was told to put the new bearings in the freezer then heat up the outer tub bearing area and install the bearings with a large socket to cover the outer edge of the new bearings. The expansion of the bearing housing and contraction of the bearings should facilitate insertion. I have yet to attempt this. Will report of my success. Also I have the link to a Movie on the Tony tool which covers the repair.

Keith, since your in the business, as am I, I'll let you in on what Maytag thinks of that tool. If you use it and something happens to the people's home/washer/body & they sue, you'll be on the hook. Maytag does not consider this an acceptable repair. That's why they sell the outer tub/bearing as 1 piece. Believe me, at every service meeting I've been at, we've had that drilled into our heads. I am not saying that it doesn't work. You just have to be careful. Maytag considers it to be a "jerry-rigged" repair. Now, on the other hand I can't beieve that the price on the tub setup has been jacked up that high (425 retail w/ the wholesale almost pushing that much). It looks like wp/maytag would like to see all those washers disappear with repair prices like that. ouch!

I never thought of that, but it wouldn't surprise me. Price replacement parts out of range, so machines get scrapped, instead of repaired. It makes sense, on Whirlpool's part.

i totally agree the car companys do it all the time vw is real bad about it.. they over price big ticket items so much that your stuck and have to get rid of the whole car.. sad aint it.. but back to subject i took my neputne apart last spring and didn a rear brg and sean and tub spinner support thing and inlet valve. the parts i got from parts came in a bag with a plastic tool thing to put the seal and brg back in. it was like a thick plastic sleve sort of thing.. honest it was an easy repair for me i didnt have any porb with mine.. and at the time i remember thinking gees this is easy i wish i had a bunch of them to work on so i could resell them. ha ha but i have since changed my mind cause im sort of over it ha ha

Maytag Neptune Bearing Removal and Replacement

I found that the old Maytag part number 200720 is the correct rear bearing for the outer tub. I have yet to install the tub bearings. If you look at the tub support dimensions you can match up the bearings. Just FYI.
