I have a question about the tub water capacity of Maytag top-loading washers that came out of the Newton Plant.

I know that once Maytag adopted the "helical" drive transmission in the 50s those machines had a designed tub capacity of 16 gallons.
In 1966 with the introduction of the "Washpower" automatics, the tub size on the "large capacity" models was increased to 19 gallons. The "standard/regular capacity" machines remained at 16.

At some point in the 1990s it is my understanding that the tub capacity on the "large capacity" machines was increased to 20 or 21 gallons. What year did this happen? Was it introduced with the "load sensor" agitator?

I'm just a curious Maytag freak here. Thanks!

MT NEWTON BUILT WASHERS TUB CAPACITY

It is my understanding that the water capacity never changed above 19 gallons. The tub cover and top of the washer were redesigned when the load sensor agitator was introduced which made the tub look bigger, but it wasn't. However these last large tub MTs were the best performing MT helical drive ever as they in addition to having the load sensor agitator they finally redesigned the motor carriage belt tensioner system so the main drive belt won't slip during agitation and the machine can actually turn over and wash a decent size load.

@combo52, you are exactly right about that.  My A106 cannot wash a set of king size sheets and pillowcases to save its life.  I always use the newer Load Sensor  machine for my bedding. alr2903

I don't doubt that the tensioning system and agitator do make a difference with king size sheets, but the fact that the 106 is the SMALL 16 gallon tub and not the 19 gallon tub would also make a big difference. After I replaced the springs, I get decent turnover with king size sheets in my 1967 806 with the standard powerfin agitator.
