Maytag Orbital Trans Shaft Coating

What is the coating on the agitator shaft of a Maytag orbital transmission and can it be renewed? I have a shaft that is in like new condition, but the coating is worn through in one spot. no rust, good clean metal. Would like to recoat it before putting it in a machine.
Also, has anyone had one chromed? Seems like that would keep it from rusting for a long time? But where to have it done?

Chrome is not durable Nickel plating would be good, however
