Hello All, I just joined the ranks. Many thanks to webmaster Robert for the invitation to join. I do not have an extensive collection at all, but I am looking for any spare parts for my vintage Maytag Automatic washer model 142 (700) from 1961. It was purchased new in 1961, and did daily washes for my grandparents and their seven children. It runs like a charm to this day. I had to replace the poly pump last year. I am more concerned with having a spare timer. The original one was replaced by a model 700 that I found in the trash. Any suggestions? Do you folks have conventions?

There is much differing opinion over which is the best place to get timers. I've had a terrible time with the one that everyone else likes----and I have had nothing but good service from the one everyone else hates!

If you are like me and do not yet have the smarts to rebuild your own----I like MidWest Timer Service, (269)849-2800 Bruce Chapman is the owner. A MUCH nicer person than the old bat that usually answers the phone----so don't take any crap from her and go straight to the top if you get any bad attitude!

I got the new timer for my 1964 Maytag Highlander from them a year ago. Bruce explained to me the differences between the two brands offered (Kingston and Mallory---seems Maytag used either one depending on what mood they were in on the assembly line that day) and I went with his reccomendation and got the Mallory----about $55.00.

Thanks Steve, gyrafoam and Kenny. Kenny, I'll get a part# as soon as I can. My old girl is in Syracuse, and I am living in Boston, only get home a few times a year now. Gyrafoam, is the Midwest timer co. a new replacement dealer? I would like an original timer. The one I have in there now is from a later A700, but my Maytag is a 142, and the original timer turned it's increments very fast and made a loud "chick" with each turn. The A700 turned like a modern timer, slow and quiet. There is an exact picture of my 142 on "Restorations", of the 1957 Lady Kenmore, photo # 2, except my machine is white. It is in the background.

I don't know if Mid-West has any new old stock on the shelves, but beware---the contacts can age just sitting there on the shelf and may be no good! My Highlander had seen virtually no use and was just a floor demo. in an old appliance store, before being stashed away in the back of the store for over forty years.

When I got it the contacts were bad. In any event I am very happy with the rebuilt one Mid-West sent. It is the original type and *chunks* when it advances.

I also wanted to add to the last post I made that I would question the integrity of ANY new in the box timer of that old a vintage for the same reasons I previously mentioned.

Now-----the *electronically gifted* amongst our group would not be intimidated, and would take the thing apart and clean/fix it themselves!
