Maytag Won't spin

Hey all. Picked up a Maytag model MAV7000AWQ top load today. Washer will wash perfectly, and pump out all the water, but doesn't spin.

I can turn the tub counter clockwise as far as I like by hand, but if I try to turn it clockwise it jams after about one turn.

I set the washer to spin, and tilted it back. The large pulley is spinning fine, no strain, no burning belt, no problems. But for some reason the tub isn't spinning. Help guys..

It's an Atlantis top load isn't it.  Not worth effort to save it.  It's a NorgeTag.  Just myu opinion but several repair people will back me up.

found the issue

The pulley and the plastic clutch peice under it are worn, and so when the washer reverses to go into spin, the pulley is not lifting quite enough to dis-engage the tub brake. Apparently this was an issue that tends to happen every so many years with these, as a 1/16 to 1/8 inch of wear is enough to cause the problem.

I could order a new thrust bearing kit, for 45 dollars, but replacing the bottom washer with a slightly thicker one acheives the exact same effect, for a total of 1 dollar. I will still be ordering a new kit, just to have on hand, as eventually I'm sure it will wear down too much for thicker washers to solve the problem.

I tested the theory with a washer I had on hand, and problem solved, washer went into a perfect spin. Unfortunately the center hole of the washer is too large, allowing the e-clip to sink into it halfway through the spin. So, Monday morning I will pop into the hardware store for a washer of the correct thickness, with a center hole of the correct size.

This may be my cheapest repair job ever.

Atlantis Transmissions.

Are one of the biggest Maytag pieces of shit ever. Whirlpool just laughed That 2 piece suspended box of junk. A WP DD could do 100 loads for every one the MT could do. Mine threw one at 5 years old but I still have it due to warranty repair.
I would reccomend a DD Whirlpool or Kenmore to replace this fancy scrap metal. It will give you many years of clean clothes without nearly as many problems. They ane one of the best TL designs ever. Just don't fall for the shredmore myth. They don't shred clothes when used correctly. I would do a rebuilt tranny ONLY because these machines wash VERY WELL and have amazing capacity.
Otherwise if you want something new go with SpeedQueen.

Kevin-- While these machines are notorious for being problem-prone, a friend had one and I really liked it. Glad you found the problem and its inexpensive solution. Have fun with it, and here's hoping good Norgetag karma persists.

Well, no matter what goes wrong with it, I dont have much invested in the machine. I got it at a yard sale for 25 dollars, so I can afford to play with it a bit.

I'm actually suprised at the complaints regarding this machine. Unde the skirt the transmission and all looks like classic Maytag, except for the one belt system. The tag says it was made in Newton and it seems to wash very well.

The transmission may completely go out of it as you guys warned, but for a 25 dollar investment, Im not to worried, lol.

I managed to find the thrust bearing kit for only 26 dollars, so decided to go ahead and order it rather than using a thicker washer. It looks like they have changed to a slightly different set up that they say wears better than the old one. At this point, I have a sum total of 51 dollars in the machine. Not bad compared to the original price of 700.

Shredmore myth

Not a myth for me. I had one of those clothes eating beasts. It replaced my Speed Queen when the old gals motor gave up the ghost.

I never overload, in fact I tend to underload, since the clothes get cleaner. That Kenmore beast still ate my clothes. Little holes and picked places, seams letting go.. No thanks on the shredmore, been there, done that. The old belt drives might not have been so bad, but the direct drives are hungry beasts.

Not to mention that the entire thing shimmied and swayed like a go-go dancer during a spin unless it was wedged tightly between the dryer and the wall... ugh.

Those Maytag's are made in Herrin, Illinois

Not newton Iowa.....if the model number is really MAV7000AWQ its not a real Maytag....but an ok machine if you take care of them.
