Maytag Wringer NX

Discovered this gem when I was cleaning out my mother's house and this was in a newer Kenmore washing machine box labeled "Ma's Old Washer. I can only assume the new automatic that came out of the box was the replacement for the old wringer that my grand parents purchased..

This forum answered some questions about the wringer but I just want to confirm one thing. It appears that this model was made in 1965 - 1966. Is that correct?

From information on Maytag Collectors Club site production of the "Blue Bell" started in 1955. Looks like yours was made in March, 1965. X=1965, E=March according to info at bottom of this thread.

That machine looks very low mileage and to just look at it I would have guessed it was more early '50. A nice find
I'm sure you will want to keep it as original as possible, however, if you decide to use it with regularity, you may want to get another type of Gyratator to pop on the shaft. Those agitators with only skirt and fins could really tangle a load of clothes.

Jim ... VERY nice NX!! 1965 was the last year that Maytag used black agitators with red accents on their wringers. They switched to the turquoise accents in January 1966.

Steven is right ... if you want to use this machine to actually wash, you should swap out that agitator for either a regular black or turquoise one. These agitators really do tangle a load of clothes. They were designed to be a "step down" from Maytag's regular line of wringers; more a sales piece, really. Try it with sheets as the load; you'll see.

You'll notice: a shorter cord, no lid hanger on the right side, different agitator, two balloon rollers ... can't remember if there's anything else. BUT ... with that agitator, I believe the tub will hold more water. Can't remember the specifics!! You are supposed to fill that tub to half way up on the bolts that hold the wringer post to the tub. That's a lot of water!! It will be just under the bolts to the top of the fins on the regular agitator.

You can tweak it, if you wish, with a hard roller that was used on the wringer of the standard N machine for the bottom one (you can find them on eBay) and a different agitator, but that sure is sweet just the way it is!! Super nice to look at; thank you for sharing!

BTW ... love the story about how you found this machine!! Can't believe it was kept in a box all these years and the way it was labeled. That just adds to it!!

Thank you for all the input but to be honest I do not plan to use it and really do not have the room to store it. I just like old things but washing machines are not one of them.

I found this forum and thought it would be nice to share.

As for "up for grabs" if someone has a true interest and would fit nice in the their collection I will entertain offers. I do collect Hot Wheels Red Lines from 1968 to 1972 so maybe if their is a collector of both maybe a trade can be put together.
