Hi. I'm looking for a Maytag Wringer Washer - I don't know the model number offhand but it was built in different model types I do know and for quite some time too. I'm looking for a white painted outside steel square aluminum tub one, whose cover is hinged and painted white over cast aluminum, with a red agitator, red agitator control pull knob and I think I saw one once with a red drain hose too. Anyone out there in washerland know about or have seen such a beast and anyone who may have one for sale? I check Craigslist regularly - they're all over the place in price and condition and usually somewhere about 500 miles or more away from me. I'd be willing to take a long drive to come and look at one if I thought it were close to what I was looking for. Good close up pictures help greatly.

You are looking for what I believe to be an early Model E2L.  I don't think Maytag ever put red drain hoses on any of their machines.  Your dream machine would have been made prior to 1966.  Does it have to have the hinged lid, and aluminum tub?  I just found a J2L on the Wausau CL for $60, built May 1962.  It was only about 20 miles from me, just north of Edgar, WI.  The J2's have the porcelain tub interior, and non-hinged cover.

Good luck!

Colors

40's red agitator

50's black agitator

60's blue agitator

The change was not on the exact decade change but generally this works.

Hi there Jim,

You are pretty close to the Cities area, which historically has seen a plethora of conventional Maytag washers come up for sale. Keep your eye out on CL and eBay and one is sure to pop up eventually. Go for a pump model.

You are wanting a Maytag Model E2 from about 1950 to 1956. The cast aluminum agitator was changed around 1950 to red bakelite, then was black bakelite from 1956 till 1965. For a very short time in 1965 they offered all conventional washers with a black poly agitator which is pretty rare now. January 1966 is when the agitator and the wringer release bar changed to turquoise till the production end in 1983. All Model E/E2 washers had a chrome knob.

This doesn't mean that you couldn't find a really nice post WWII model E2 with either a red or black agitator. The red ones do pop up from time to time on parts donors. A red hose was not offered on a Maytag - all Maytag wringer hoses were black rubber with either a pot metal (pre 1939) or a painted white spigot (1939 - 1983).

Well, I've given up my search because I found something I feel is much nicer - take a look at my photos and you'll see what I mean. I've gone from wanting Red to Aquablue.

Hello Mickey & John,

Thanks for the info - I was in 11th grade in 1965. Where has the time gone?
