We chose our new fridge freezer today, the L.G. GR-559FWD,564 litres or 19.92 cu.ft.,top freezer 181 litres and refrigerator capacity 383 litres.
We spent the morning scouring the stores both normal and online however virtually everywhere was out of stock and new shipments had arrived but were tied up on the docks and would not be available for about 10 days.
Went to Clive Peters and the chap rang around the other stores and luckily was able to find one for us it is being delivered on Thursday, got a pretty good deal as well, their normal retail price is $1599.00 however he asked what other prices we were quoted told him the Good Guys price $1459.00 and Appliancesonline was $1406.00 delivered for free, so he did it for us at $1350.00 and threw in the extended 3 year warranty for free normal cost $109.00 now normally I dont worry about extended warranties, but seeing as though it was a freebie I took it.
Features,
1.564 litres
2.Manual water tank built in door but can be removed by unclipping it and you have an extra door shelf.
3.Twist ice cube trays and storage box.
4.Electronic temperature control displayed on fridge door.
5.Bioshield anti-bacterial agent applied to seal to slow down bacteria growth,(more likely a gimmick really.)
6.Moist balance crisper.
7.Super Cool function for rapid cooling down for a large load or for quickly cooled drinks.
Cheers good people.
Steve.

Thanks

Thanks Chris, I certainly hope it does too, it came down to a choice of 3.this one a 539 litre bottom mount Samsung and the one I liked a 510 litre bottom mount Kelvinator, but this was a bit bigger and we felt a bit better bang for the buck as they say, I also felt the Samsung shelves felt a little bit flimsy and the fridge part was about 30 or so litres smaller.
The L.G. also had a 4.5 star energy efficiency rating whereas the current S.B.S. is only about 3 so hopefully it may save us a bit of money in running costs.
Cheers.
Steve.

When you say "manual" water tank I'm guessing it doesn't get plumbed into the water line? I've never heard of that yet but it sounds interesting. I'd just as soon not have the fridge hooked up to the water supply and just fill a container every so often. We're not big ice users so an automatic ice maker isn't worthwhile for us either and just something else to breakdown.

Water tank

Hi Petek,
Yes it is a manual water tank which is sits inside the top fridge door shelf, you fill it with either tap water or bottled water if you like and the dispenser is in the front of the fridge door.
If after a while you decide you dont like or want it, you can remove it by unclipping the tank from the shelf and presto you have another storage shelf for other items.

An Average fridge of 400L or more capacity will cost between $1000 and $2500

Miele is around $8K per fridge

Smaller fridges are between $500 and $1000 but you'd be hard pressed to find anything cheaper than $500

My Stainless 440L F&P cost $1700 about 5 years ago. That was still when they were a domestic branded fridge made 10km from where I live. Nothing too special about it, Glass shelves, Frost free and thats about it.

We pay a huge amount of money for the big US Fridges, the Whirlpools Side by Side and GE Side by Side start from around $2500, they're seen as stylish, but space inefficient and expensive to run.

We have...

....a 430litre Westinghouse upside down model that is 4yrs old..basically the same as the one in the link without the telescopic freezer dreawers...

We bought it along with a cooktop, oven, washing machine and plasma TV so managed to get a reasonable discount. Even then, and knowing the sales person, it still cost $1300 4yrs ago...

What people need to remember is that our market is relatively small so the sales volumes are not high...and our population is only about 23million...compared to the 300 odd million of the US....if you want to keep some form of local manufacturing you either need to charge an appropriate price or export or both...

Electrolux have, so far, shifted dishwashers, cooktops and small fridges to Asia but have kept ovens and larger fridges here....time will tell, but given you can get large Samsung/Bosch (by Daewoo...still has that Bosch badge though) and LG fridges for well under AUD$2000, I don't think it will be long....

Oh, and just note that our dollar is worth about 90USCents...so multiply by 90% to get an approx cost in USD...

Prices

Hi Guys,
Just had a quick look at Appliancesonline,Chris, your Westinghouse has become a little cheaper around $1140, and Nathan your F&P is round about the same $1699 or thereabouts.
Actually the salesman at Clive Peters showed me a couple of the new G.E. range they are now carrying and a S.B.S. around the high 600-700 litres cost $8500.00,for that money I could buy about 6-7 of my new fridges.
Chris you mention Daewoo/Bosch, well Betta appliances had in their catalogue a 618 litre S.B.S. for just $998.00, if you wanted a fairly large S.B.S. how could you go wrong.
I guess one could make a point about a fairly unknown brand in Daewoo, but I believe most consumers buy mostly on price these days so I guess a fair few people would take a chance on it.

Steve...

....Clive Anthonys here had about 8 of them at the same price as it includes $300 rebate from Bosch...but, rather than just buying the thing, I rang home all excited and was quite calmly told to:

'move away from the appliances and out of the door of the shop'

..spoilt all my fun....

Still, I have a new Westinghouse 90cm gas cooktop and Electrolux under cupboard extractor coming...

A fun day's shopping

Sounds as though you had a fun day shopping Chris, pity you had the fridge fun spoilt though, under cupbopard extractor?, sounds very interesting, perhaps you may post a few pictures when you receive it, I will get some snaps of the new fridge when it comes Thursday, damn! I miss out on seeing it come through the door and being set up,bloody work who needs it.
Actually Chris a very strange thing happened just this afternoon, the repairman who came last week was interested in our old S.B.S. for parts or some such thing turned up to get it,(you see my sister told him last week he could just have it.)!!!!!,well he showed up this afternoon and gave us $150.00 bucks for it anyway,as I was helping him get the beast out of the house he received a phone call from one of his mates in the same industry who quite scarily was trying to repair, yep you guessed it a G.E.S.B.S.!!!!!!!anyhow this customer actually purchased the P.C. board I mentioned earlier for $495.00 and when the guy put it in it apparently shorted out some other wiring in the fridge, so now he told the other guy they will have to strip the thing totally apart and go through the wiring bit by bit, hhmmm so perhaps I was wise not to spend the money on repairs after all.
Actually he asked what we bought and we told him, he mentioned that we chose fairly wisely in buying the L.G.as he said a simialr P.C. board for an L.G. is only about $125.00 compared to 495.oo for the other one.
It is very strange going into the kitchen and seeing a huge hole where there should be a fridge I tell you, oh well roll on Thursday.
God bless our beloved neighbours, storing the few perishbles wer have for us till then.

Here is the link...

...to the extractor that we are getting...

It sits in a cut-out in the base of an overhead cupboard...

Currently there is a copper 'hood' with no fan in it as there is a 1981 Jenn-air cooktop with downdraft ventilation. Frankly, if it sucked, it wouldn't suck quite so much....anyway, this will slot into the cupboard above and a 90c, Westinghouse 4+wok gas cook top will go into the modified workbench...
