Hello all,

Today I picked up a mid 80's Whirlpool washer, the outside cleaned up nicely but the previous owner must have washed some heavy loads because the agitator splines are stripped off both the agitator and the top of the transmission!

How do you more experienced appliances fixers solve this problem? Hope all is well!

Wow, if the splines on the agitator shaft are stripped, that requires pulling and opening up the tranny to change the shaft.

Those splines usually rust due to an agitator cap stud seal missing or worn out causing a loss of the air pocket that keeps water from getting inside the agitator.

As stated above it needs the shaft replaced. If you could find a donor machine to scavenge the transmission from, you could replace the entire tranny.
