Saw the following whilst nosing around Gardenweb's Laundry Room forum.

Interestingly checked two local shops that sell Persil and have for ages since they originally sold Miele laundry appliances as well. They only have two sizes of Universal powder, nothing else. Perwoll ja, that they have along with the entire Miele Care collection.

Will telephone MieleUSA tomorrow and see what there is if anything.

Given the costs associated with importing Persil/Henkel products and perhaps low sales maybe MieleUSA is doing what so many companies are today; looking for ways to run a tighter ship. Now that there is an apparently Henkel sanctioned Persil store, the need for MieleUSA to be the exclusive and sole importer is less one should thin, Then there are places like Germandeli.com and other places both online and elsewhere that sell Persil/European laundry products. Oh and you also have eBay as well.

For what it`s worth, there has been a "joint venture" between Henkel and Bosch since 2006 in Germany.

Haven`t seen a Miele washer for ages in a Persil ad. No surprise that Miele has been looking out for new shores.

There`s even a coffe shop-laundromat in Munich featuring Henkel detergents and Bosch equipment.

Oh I wish they had nicer launderettes here in the UK. Most of them are quite run down now. :(

Saying that my local one has recently had a new floor, 3 brand new JLA dryers and has been rearranged. That's a good sign!

Persil ist todt

Rang up my local supplier first thing this morning and was informed they only have the powder left. Totally sold out of both types of gel and that "their supplier stopped importing, but they are looking for a new source...). Since this place was one of the original Miele showroom/stores going way back can only assume they are that "supplier".

MieleUSA only has one type of Persil powder on it's website, none of the gels or liquids aside from Perwoll for woolens and the other for darks.

Pity really as one just got used to the scent of Persil color gel (it is fine if you use small dosages), and the stuff is good for coloured shirts, linens and so forth. Oh well that would be that it seems. Am not paying the highway robbery prices on fleaPay for the stuff (nearly or over $30 per bottle), so will see what happens in future.

Spoke with MieleUSA and was told around early last summer things simply stopped arriving. That is orders were placed for the various Persil gels, megaperls etc... but nothing arrived from Germany. They all are just as much in the dark (well the rank and file at least) it seems as everyone else. Nothing official was ever said but as of now things are what they are.

I was afraid of that. When I was on persilstore.com, I noticed in the description for universal megaperls that it stated "Order today as this difficult to find product is scarce in the US or Canada and it is uncertain whether we will be able to get this product again in the future." Though productswithstyle.com does not, as well as betterproductsonline.com. The three sites seem to be related as the ordering interface is the same. I've ordered from all three, they offer free shipping on various items.
I'm hoping all is not lost, MieleUS has updated their website to include the new packaging of universal powder, but sadly that's it. All of the other varieties are gone. Again, trying to be optimistic, have noticed that the colour powder and duo caps have been turning up on Amazon and these sites.
I'm bummed, the colour formulas are the only decent ones available in the US. I really wish Henkel US would take and add a Persil inspired line to their current cra..I mean value line up.

Don't care for Henkel no more

I won a bunch of Somat Gold dishwasher tabs to review them - not impressed.

Bought some new Vernel Soft & Oils fabric softener - not impressed.

As far as Persil is concerned: the packages of the best-formulated Megaperls keep shrinking (15 loads now) and Henkel recently even added 33% useless filler to it, increasing the minimum dosage by 1/3. The super-expensive liquid Pods (DuoCaps) for whites just completely failed in a consumer magazine's test, redepositing the soil instead of washing it away.

My take is that maybe Henkel might be launching Persil in the US like they did in Mexico. If that does in fact happen hopefully it won't be at nosebleed prices that Miele has charged. I have a stash of Persil MegaPearls color and Universal powder that is taking awhile to go thru since I also use Tide HE Powder Original and with Bleach. I am a detergent whore...and proud of it! Lol

"...and Henkel recently even added 33% useless filler to it, increasing the minimum dosage by 1/3."

What do you mean? I use German Persil megaperls for years and the dosing table is always the same.
The first two pictures - megaperls from 2010; the third and fourth - megaperls from 2014. There is no difference in dosage.

I noticed the lack of Persil Megaperls last month when I was trying to order it. I also saw that Miele only had the universal powder and nothing else. Thing is I have used the Miele detergents powder and liquid in the past, and for me they clean just as well as Persil does. So I just ordered a batch of Miele detergents and everything is good. I just don't want to wash colored items in optical brighteners. For me all of the Miele detergents clean and rinse just fine and for what it's worth are made in Germany, if that matters to anyone.

Would be interesting to see Persil enter the USA market. Henkels Dial, and Purex brands are here so the toes are already on the shore.

I would like to see Henkel laundry products on the shelves here too.
We've a Unilever and P&G duopoly almost other than own brand and specialist detergents.

Premium: Persil (Unilever) & Ariel (P&G)
These two come on umpteen versions and formats.

Scent oriented: Surf (Unilever) & Bold (P&G)
Budget: Daz (P&G)... Surf was in this category but was repositioned.

Specialist : Woolite (R&B)… Persil Silk & Wool(Unilever)

R&B dominates the wash boost additives with Vanish with various P&G Ariel branded products too.

Softeners : Comfort (Unilever) and Lenor (P&G)

Ecover is the main eco detergent & softener range with some smaller ones too.

Store brands are the only other options.

Can't See Henkel Entering The USA Laundry Market

In a bit way with Persil. That would mean going toe to toe with P&G/Tide and just don't see how that would work. The laundry product market in the USA is shrinking as a few dominate players carve up the market. P&G is having it's own worries trying to keep Tide sales up, if the market cannot support one dominate/high priced product cannot see two of them battling it out.

Mexico like much of Latin America is a different story, those markets are almost wide open .

The fact no one can lay hands on these various incarnations of Persil from Henkel tells me something is afoot. Either they are being discontinued, there are production problems, are being reformulated and or something similar is being launched in future.

For whites and colourfast could live with any of the other products in my stash or off the US shelves. However aside from the European offerings we do not have a decent TOL laundry detergent for colours, especially one that is OBA free. More over one that is low froth for use in front loading washing machines. There are commercial products but not everyone wants or needs to order things in 50lb sacks or pails.

Here's a picture taken on the 21st of October and posted on the German forum by user hejdo. The minimum dosage went up by one third from 45 to 60 ml.

logixx, thank you! I bought my megaperls in the summer with the old dosage.

I'm confused. Why would they do such a thing with the best powder in Europe!? I buy it because it's light and compact. Now what! It's heavier than the normal powder and almost the same volume.

The biggest challenge for the detergent makers is probably the rise of Private Label / Own Brand products that are proving to perform extremely well.

The supermarkets have all upped their game in terms of own-brand and this is one area where they seem to have made really big inroads.

I would love to see Persil on our shelves but like Laundress suggests I can't see it. The problem in the USA with EVERYTHING is that we have become a mature market. We've had most of everything and the manufacturers can no longer get us the way they want to with commercials.

They can no longer say "look....look how much better our product is" because consumers have use it, tried something cheaper and decided that the cheaper stuff works well enough. This means manufacturers have to look to untapped markets. I think Henkel has looked at our market and decided that they can't make money here and it would never sell on the shelves.

Can you see this on the shelves and the advertisement? "Oh this is the best detergent in Germany" People in the USA are going to run to buy it?....I bet not.

It might be best to have a Bro in Germany ship it over but even then how would this work?

How do you pay them in Euros. What happens in customs? Can this even be done? What does this end up costing?

So if I want to use a detergent on colors without optical brighteners maybe the only shot at this is to buy Miele for colors. It's not cheap, it's not as expensive as Persil, but it does work.

What does this end up costing?

Via DHL

- parcel up to 4.4 lbs = $20

- parcel up to 11 lbs = $45

Plus a few bucks for Persil. In the end probably not much cheaper, if at all, than buying it online.
