anyone have any special or favorite mini fridges? My fave,a 1968 italian made
"topp"has fallen a bit "ill"with start relay problems;will sometimes fail to start
trip the overload protector, then sucsessfully restart when OL resets...replaced
the relay(with a salvaged used one)about 10 yrs ago.If i cannot fix the relay in
the fridge and a replacement not readily avalible, one of my other minis will get
rotated into use untill the "topp" is fixed:
others in my mini fridge fleet:
-'70s norcold-japanese,not all that well insulated-can't cope with very hot days.
-'83 monkey LG-it's in than nasty faux woodgrain..
-'83 "kenmore"-japanese,same faux woodgrain as above...nice runner though.
-'99 whirlpool-brazilian,a nice one-my 2nd fave,though i don't care for the
cabinet side condenser arrangement.
-'03 haier-has LG compressor.
-'06 haier-"big mini"-cabinet side condenser.
Biggest fault i have found with most mini fridges is they tend to be badly
insulated(the"topp"is pretty good)
I have not tried any peltier junction"thermoelectric"minis, but i have liked
peltier camping coolers.

We have a 1985 GE 4 cf mini fridge with simulated wood grain door and top work surface.  We use it in our office for drinks and snacks so we don't have to go downstairs.  The printer sits on top of it.  Got it used on CL for $40.  I have noticed that sometimes the overload protector will trip, but then it starts fine.

I would really like to find an older model of pretty much any make (except Montgomery F'n Wards) with enamel paint in brown or coppertone instead of the simulated wood grain we have now.  There was a nice 60's-70's little Frigidaire in an almost terracotta color at my old office that had been left behind by a group that moved to different quarters.  It sat next to a full sized fridge in the break room and I really wanted to snag it, but it had a couple of cans of soda rattling around in it so I thought better of making it disappear, even though it wasn't the property of the department that was occupying the space, and I knew the person who had brought that cute little fridge from home and donated it for her by-then-gone group to use.  She left it behind because she didn't want it anymore, so technically it was up for grabs and absolutely wasn't company property.

My sis' had a small (posibly 4 CBF) brown cube w/ woodgrained door when she went away to college & it has since been used as a 2nd fridge until my mom passed, in which case it sits on the bar in the basement unused...

(My dad will NOT turn it on in interest in keeping the freon circulating either; his "energy saving ways" dictate his stinginess on "using electricity frivolously"--he won't even have a light on in the bathroom when he takes his shower at night--or when he even brushes his teeth!)

Not sure of the brand of the fridge, but I hated when it was on because the compressor caused annoying ticks in the speakers of my stereo, even when it wasn't on...

That seemed to happen no matter what room in the house it was plugged into, as well... (My bedroom was in the basement at the time & on the same circuit as the outlets under the bar...)

small frigidaire

year before last,at the salvation army,was a smaller,i think 24"wide,Ca.1965
frigidaire fridge i was going to buy;they had it priced at $50-it was plugged in
and cooling well.Next week i was there and found it priced at $10 with a note on
it that said"compressor going bad, would make a nice smoker"i asked about this
and they said someone told them the compressor was going bad because it made a
rattle when running-i listened and a rhythmic rattle could be heard, sounded like
a fractional hp split phase motor sounds when it has a worn bushing.Noise was not
very loud-might be normal for a frigidaire compressor of this era?sounded like
4-pole speed :)My truck was loaded with a washer,so didn't grab the fridge-planned
to get it monday-went for it and it was gone....
BTW the door pull was square and chrome with a blue inlay with emblem as i recall
-does that sound around 1965 era?
