Well, there I was just minding my own business at a friend's house, baking a chocolate cake when the mixer just stopped. Actually, it slowed down for a moment, then resumed speed, then stopped. No pop, no smoke, just one dead mixer, as if someone had pulled the plug.

The mixer is a Hamilton Beach Model G.

I checked the brushes (they're fine). The mixer had a new cord installed at some point in the past, but the capacitors are original. There are 2 caps.

One connected to the line cord, connecting both the white and black wires, with a bare wire going to the body. Both the black and white wires go up into the body of the mixer to the speed control / motor. The writing on this cap is: 178591, 115VAC, KM-96A. I don't know how to translate that to anything useful. This cap looks to be in okay condition.

The second cap has a ruptured end and has leaked what looks like wax out that end. This cap is connected to the speed control. It's numbers are: 178951, 115VAC, WM-97.

I assume I'll need to replace the second cap (I might as well replace the 1st while I'm in there too). What are the specs for these caps and where would I buy replacements?

Thanks,
Dave

PS: The mixer was kind enough to wait until I was just finishing whipping the frosting to die, so the extra-dark chocolate cake with extra-dark frosting was a complete success.

I am not sure it's the capacitor... I had a Sunbeam model 11 that refused to run for years and I figured it was the capacitor, but after fiddling with the speed control adjustment, the mixer started running again! I also had an HB Model G that ran at one continous speed, so again, I thought capacitor, but I was able to get it back to normal by adjusting the speed control. I just don't remember what exactly I did, though...
