What can be mixed and why should you?
I regularly mix detergent and oxygen bleach with clothes that have been spot treated with Shout.

What cannot be mixed and why not?
I know you can't mix chlorine bleach and ammonia, but what about oxygen bleach and ammonia? I tend to do my sheets, bedspreads and towels on hot with detergent and oxygen bleach. In a recent discussion, ammonia was suggested for sheets and items with body oils.

What combinations are most effective and why?

OK, the BIG danger is with chlorine bleach. When mixed with ammonia, it produced chloramine gas, which can kill you. Similarly, you should not mix chlorine bleach with an acid, like vinegar, because that could produce chlorine gas, which also can kill you.

However, oxygen bleach doesn't contain chlorine, so it MIGHT be safe, but then I have to wonder, if your clothes are not getting clean with one or the other, look at your detergent and water temperature before teasing the dragon. Oxygen bleach and ammonia both are basic, so they would not react violently like acids and bases might, but why do it? With all the great enzyme based HE laundry detergents out there, there really should be no need.
