Mixmaster Model 12 Tragedy

Dear Friends,

I am so sad.

I was happily mixing my second batch of oatmeal raisin cookies with my newly refreshed Model 12. I had creamed the butter and sugar. I added the eggs and watched in blissful wonder as the mixture transformed from a liquidy light brown, gaining texture and volume, into a beautiful fluffy sand color. I turned the Mixfinder dial to the off position, and the mixer did not stop. Only slightly worried, I moved it forward then turned it back again. The beaters slowed and the sound changed to a lower, unhealthy growl.

Concerned, I reached for the power cord, and in the half second before I got the plug out of the wall, the mixer went "CRACK!" and began to billow white smoke from all available ports and orifices.

Can this mixer be saved? Can I save it with your help?

I know there is Phil's Appliance Science, he restores mixmasters and does one hell of a good job too.

He restored a model 12C for me last year, it came back looking and running like new!

Yikers... surely someone at WACEM will know. Thankfully Model 12's are still widely available so you can probably find new innards and do it yourself if you really want to keep the one you've got for sentimental reasons.

Jon (jetcone) has done some restoration work on the MM's, perhaps he'll be kind enough to give us some pointers. I have five of them that need work - and one 12c of Terry's too!

The Culprit...

Thanks for the encouragement, compliments and ideas.

I got this mixer for $1 at an estate sale and gave it a good cleaning, new power cord and gear grease myself. I'm hoping to keep it cheap and fix it myself.

I took it apart, and I think the piece in the picture is my problem. Anyone know what it is, what it's specs are and where I can get one?

Thats one of two capacitors

That lives right under the speed dial. You'll need another mixmaster for a good one though, or go to one of the sites above.

Can you get the value and the voltage rating of the capacitors in question-usually for motor brush bypass its .01Uf at 600VDC Ceramic.Most any electronic supplier should have them or can get them.
