I like the older Whirlpool direct drives but all the VMWs are junk no matter when they’re made. They don’t clean your clothes.

My brother’s 3 year old WTW5010LW0 VMW from 2021, is already loud on the spin cycle. Sounds like it’s going to be taking off at any minute. It’s like a loud noise accompanied by vibration. My Whirlpool WTW5000DW3 also sounds like a jet taking off on the spin cycle now.

My friend’s 2021 Amana NTW4516FW3 washer and my friend’s 2021 WTW4816FW2 also is loud when spinning. Was told this is bearings, but Whirlpool must be using TERRIBLE quality bearings if they have this high of a failure rate. Whirlpool must be using the cheapest bearings ever in their gearcases.

The Amana NTW4516FW3 is a newer model, too, from 2021. It even has the newer phone number thing on it instead of the older America sticker, and the bearing already went bad.

Also, the Whirlpool units have control board issues and will run the drain pump all day and throw an F3E1 error code!

Whirlpool VMWs are worse than Samsung machines and GE washers. This may be controversial, but I think the GE chug chug model Ts and HydroWaves were good machines and they last for many years, they also cleaned just fine. The newest GE’s are also junky.

This is what my brothers whirlpool sounds like.

And the WTW4816FW I said was actually a 2023 WTW4816FW3 machine, meaning it’s only 1-2 years old, and it already has bad bearings and since it’s a 2023 I bet it’ll eventually get the continuous drain mode.

my experience...

...is a 2010 VMW Bravos-a reverse bloom washplate machine-it actually does a good wash performance IF load size is just right :)I hate the goofy rebalance routine this thing can get stuck in: drain-spin attempt-fill-agitate-drain-spin attempt before default to slow spin.I have done test washes in agitator VMWs that i have salvaged and fixed, but did not pay much attention to wash results-often cold water test run anyway.Fixed VMWs placed in storage or passed to other people. The '10 Bravos is a "collection" machine that gets rotated into use from time to time.Didn't some Samsung top loads overspeed and blow up? :)

Your claim that VMW's don't clean clothes is demonstrably FALSE.

I've got close to 100 videos alone of a Whirlpool commercial vmw that I had. Model CAE2795FQ.

That washer never gave me one problem in the over 2 years I had it. I sold it simply to get other machines.

It also cleaned my dirty uniforms like any other machine I had.

Don't lump all the VMWs together.

Even the Amana NTW4516FW I had was a great washer. Worked well and cleaned great.

Even whirlpool with what they're going through now I would still get a washer through them before I would any Samsung or LG.

I'd rather support an American company than 2 Korean ones.

I own a VMW myself and I’ve had it for 11 years and the bearings only started getting noisy.

My machine is a 2014 Whirlpool WTW4900BW0 washer. If you take care of them right they last while, but all the ones outlined in this post are the newer ones and those seem to be worse overall than older ones like mine.

The commercial VMWs seem to be pretty good machines almost never see bearing issues on those thanks to the premium bearing on those machines.

My brother has the 2013 agitator WTW4800XQ4, noisy bearing again but works otherwise, it did have the suspension rods go out before too so it was out of balance on spin but that issue was taken care of. It’s loud again due to bad bearings.

My whirlpool needed a new actuator, installed one today because it stopped agitating properly. Typical failure and common.

I’m not fixing the bearing issue because it’s in gearcase that’s way too expensive of a part, whirlpool’s poorly designed transmission is NOT serviceable. The bearings are known for failing. Look online and you see so many VMWs with bad bearings. This is a very very common problem with these.

My washer is from late 2019, meaning it'd be about 5 years old. The Amana NTW4516FW3 is a newer model from 2021, and it’s a later model.

It has failed bearings, not as loud as some others with bearing issues but definitely noticeable.

Laappliance Guy had a 2021 WTW4816FW2 with bad bearings, my friends’s 2023 WTW4816FW3 had the same noise as that one in his video when I spun the drum by hand. 2023 machine with bad bearings.

non-servicable transmission

you are right on that-i tried to fix a bad bearing one once-drilled out the stamp-rivit things and discovered the bearings crimped in place and stamped frame too thin to do much with.

The direct drives solved several major problems the filter flos had while providing marked improvements in several major categories. DDs eliminated the tub boot that could dislodge and dump over a dozen of gallons of water on the floor, the surplus water between the inner and outter tubs was done away with. Pump leaks did not damage the clutch. Oil couldn't get into the water like FFs. DDs handled off balance loads much better. DD used less material to build and weighed less in transport.

DDs provided better agitation and spinning. Overall they rinsed better. DDs had more capacity, and with the dual action agitators could handle even more clothes on top of that.

DDs were an advancement over all other top loaders before and after.

Roper VMW

With all this VMW talk, remembered i have had ~2020 Roper in storage for about 4 years that i have not checked out-guy said it "did not work right"-might pull it out see what happens :) this washer has an "agipeller"usuall center post, but shallow fins.
