The MW washer history is a bit tangled. I know that in the '60s Westinghouse made the front-loaders and Norge made the top-loaders. Then in the '70s, I think Westinghouse started to make a few top-loaders for MW. A while back someone posted a picture from a '50s MW catalog that showed an Apex(??) top-loader.
I had an 86 Westinghouse(WCI) Montgomery Ward Washer and Dryer. It had a really strange lint filter. The agitator disassembled and it was inside the agitator. Also, the lid lock waited for 3 minutes after the end of the cycle to unlock. It made a very distinct click.
Where those locks some kind of thermoelectric deal? Mom had one, " no matter how you turn that timer dial, you cant get that damn thing open, till those minutes are up". She never really cared for it much.
I know the modern Frigidaire TL locks are...you can actually let them pop out and wedge a screwdriver under them to defeat the lidswitch which isn't solenoid-controlled (or else they would put a hole in your finger when you defeated it...LOL) because they take FOREVER to unlock under "normal" circumstances!
I worked for MW from 1985-1990, at that time there were two lines of MW washers. The ones that said "Montgomery Ward" were WCI-Westinghouse, and the "Signature 2000" were Norge built.
