my 1978 BD Whirlpool washer's noises

How come when my 1978 BD Whirlpool washer kicks into agitate, instead of going grrrrrrind, click, clunk as it is supposed to, it goes grrrrrrind, click, clunk-CLACK, and during the CLACK part, it does it so hard, it shakes the drain standpipe? Any ideas on what is causing this?

Sounds like the agitate spring might be weak or broken and not seating the agitate gear fully. Is it a rhythmic knocking sound, or does it stop soon after it engages to agitate?

It only clacks really hard once when it engages to agitate, no rhythmic knocking sound. It agitates smoothly after that.
