My AEG 74640

hey folks,
well heres one of my collection thats been totally overlooked but happens to be probably the best machine i've ever had..introducing my AEG 74640

This machine is the most versatile i've ever owned.

its 1400rpm spin is extremely effective. it washes amazingly with its recirculatory jet and is well equiped for stains. with option buttons for pre-wash, soaking which can be anything from an hour to 19hours which compramises of a prewash & then tumbling every few minutes...a quick wash button for the lighter soiled loads, & a stain button which teamed with the in wash treatment compartment in the dispenser releases stain products at the right time in the cycle.

now heres for the interesting bit. when i first bought this machine, i read through the manual and found the "Rinse +" option. as i'm an avid fan of high level water rinsing & pre programmed this as soon as i got it. So this option adds 2 rinses & raises water level up considerably.

Now for what i discovered 3years after first owning it...this little beauty has a hidden rinse feature that has me amazed. which is what i've made a video of; when you DE-select rinse + and just make do with its normal rinsing....when the machine slows down from the spin after the first intermittent spin..it distributes and fills, just the same as jon (lavamat jon)'s 86741. now where our 2 differ is the interesting bit..once the machines finished filling...it tumbles for a minute or so...& then to my amazement...the machine distributed again pinning everythin to the sides of the walls of the drum with the jet on...& WHOOOSh the machine goes into orbit with a 500rpm spin!

it does this another 3 times in the rinse before draining, spinning and doin it all over again...i'm well impressed. because as little water it uses to do this, the results are amazing...that and it much reminds me of my old hoover newwave which used to do spin in the wash cycle

Your AEG has got a very big lid (oblò)... but since when even in UK you say CIAO?!?!? Wasnt it Italian, though I know that either in Czech they say like so?

Hmm, so (dumb question department), are these still made, and are they available in the US (maybe under a different brand)?

Multiple spin-rinses are always a good thing, lets you use lots of detergent to scrub out difficult dirt and then get all of it out so the clothes aren't itchy.

not so sure if AEG are avaliable over there. i think some places do and under the AEG name too. its a great rinser. i'll have to post a video of the high level rinse too. which i love...now if only it span in the rinses on high level

As far as I know AEG is not sold in the USA. But in Canada you can buy AEG appliances, for instance through Euro-line Appliances. Here's the link.

Darren - have to say it took me by surprise when I was watching it yesterday hehe. It's great isn't it when you find little tricks that you nbever realised the washer will do. I was all set trying to see if my Zanussi did something similar today, but I only went and put the load in on a 2 hour cottons cycle and when I heard the end of cycle beep go off I thought "bollocks" lol. Will try again tomorrow!

Designgeek - you can buy AEGs in the USA from Euro Line in Canada, but I would imagine if you ever needed service it would be quite difficult to get.

Did hoover quattro's do a similar sort of thing in the rinse? I think it only went as far a the dispribute speed tho.

It would indeed be interesting to know if it did it on the L88810

I luv the quattro's!!!! my mates mum has the electronic version, i like the way it sits and thinks about what its got to do next, lol,
at the start, it waits about 2mins before filling... it think its a 'self-check'!! and after the mid spins, it sits for a bout a minute before it fills for the next rinse

my machines r well in a sorry state of play at the moment i need some revival...the servis is standing strong. as i'd expect. my logic is rather unwell. need to get that sorted. & i sold the faulty newwave so im plannin on buyin an old zanussi. myt save for a electrolux insight. or a aeg l88810.

or get a quattro easy logic they sound very similar to my Newwave. it used to b abit similar in opperation.

whats the water level like on those machines?

I lurve that Video Darren.It reminds me a bit of my Lg Intellowasher which was a german model and it sprayed the clothes during each rinse/spin about 4 times with a jet i always loved that. wish i'd have got a video of it last year but hey. If i get another one i'll make sure i do it. keep looking on ebay

Darren, Thanks for the great explanation and deomonstration. On the regular rinsing program with the distribution spin and spraying, is two the total number of the rinses? This must be faster than the rinse plus option. Is the final rinse water as clear as the final rinse water from the rinse plus program?

steve; b sure to make a video if u get an LG tht does that!
tom:the number of rinses with normal rinsing is 3 but only 2 high level rinses if timesaver is pressed. the rinsing is faster on the normal rinses but you have to do the full 2 hour cycles. but with rinse + and time saver;u still get the high rinses which is about 4 on each program at high level it just cuts time off the main wash cycle.

i was baffled at how well things were rinsed it was pretty clear. but i will b goin back to my high level rinsing shortly. i'm having withdrawels lol.

I`ve owned a AEG 74640 and got my money back because of the recirculated "sprayrinse". Let me explain.
The normal rinsepattern on cottoncycles with maximum final spinspeed without rinse+ was like that:
3 lowlevel rinses with the jet on and 3 highspeed intermediate spins with the jet off, of course.
If I selected quickwash then there were only 2 rinses (one highlevel followed by 1 low waterlevel) and two intermediate highspeedspins.
With rinse+ selected the machine would do 4 rinses (3 highlevel 1 medium) but only 2 intermediate spins at ridiculously slow 400 rpm. Again when quickwash was selected 1 rinse got skipped.
Had some trouble with the bearings before and I was not so happy with the machine at all, so as my machine started to spray soapy, recirculated water on my laundry while the intermidiate spins instead of draining my patience was wearing thin. This would have been the 3rd repair covered by warranty. So I made them pick up the AEG and traded it in for a Miele.
Still not sure if the problem was the pump not switching from recirculating to draining or if to blame the electronic control. I`ll never know.

sorry to hear you had a bad experience with your machine. i have to say im really pleased with mine. do you have a miele instead now then?

Yes I do have a Miele instead of the AEG and I love it.
Differently from the AEG 74640 it realizes the loadsize and shortens the wash, rinse and even the spincyle dramatically for small loads. I also fancy the rinseperfomance much better than the AEGs because the number of rinses does not change, when I use a quickwashprogramm.
I also hated the recirculation pump of the AEG because of hygienic reasons. The Miele showers the gasket and the door with fresh clean water while the rinsefills. I like that.

Oh I almost forgot....the out of balance control of the AEG was just brilliant. At this point it even beats the Miele.

i have to agree on the out of balance sensor. its never given up a spin and has spun dramatically many a time. much better than my samsung which i thought i'd try n sold because it never did full spin and took about 6years to balance!

Might be different on mine cos mine's a larger capacity model than Darren's, but I've found with my AEG 86741 that it takes 2 or 3 minutes to get into a spin sometimes and even when it is "balanced" it isn't that balanced anyway & still shakes somewhat; whereas the Miele is distributed evenly in 15 seconds I think, and mum's new Zanussi likewise, however after seeing Darren's 74640 spinning I think my AEG must havea more sensitive sensor!

Your Samsung sounds like it had the same system as the LG Darren. The display countdown hung for about 6-9 minutes whilst it tried to balance the clothes out and it did that everytime it did a rinse spin so it added ages to a full program. My Miele just went into spin and was rock solid everytime. The Hoover Nexta was very good at balancing only having the odd go at rebalancing if it wasn't happy. My Candy and Ariston machines would rarely spin at 1500 though unless it was perfectly balanced, seemed to hold at about 1200 instead so 1500 was abit silly as it was once in a blue moon lol. jon i think ur theorys probably true of you OOB sensor...it does seem a tad more sensitive than mine. my machine seems to not care too much. lol.

Steve. i couldnt stand the fact my samsung refused to spin. i think the only time it ever did full 1200rpm was when i ran it with nothing in it when i first got it!

im in the process of picking a new machine at a reasonable price for my brother. around the £300 mark give or take a little. might go abit higher if i get him on a payment plan through work.

lets have your opinions of reasonale machines for the price.and maybe a line as to why you think the machines are good! thanks! i'll be interested to see peoples views.
