When I was a kid, my dad worked in purchasing for a big chemical company which was a big producer of phosphates. He was in purchasing at the plant level, and there was a local producer of detergents/maintentance chemicals called Robins Chemical. He found that they made laundry detergent and sold it in 25 lb bags. He got a sample, and my mom liked it.

My mom would take orders from the neighbors and we'd get to go down to Robins downtown and pick up bags of detergent--kind of kewl to drive down near Wharf Street.

Only when I was a teenager did my mom start using "real" detergent (usually All, sometimes Oxydol)
