Ya
I like to see those two pieces.
Are you able to take off the agitator? It's suppose to be removed when not in use so you can clean under it. If it was a pump model, its suppose to have a screen under the agitator that is removable for cleaning.
(Screen also protects the pump from objects that could cause damage to the pump)
Your machine has pre drill holes in the cross bars underneath for a pump to be added if the customer wanted to add one.
It's not 1940... It's may look like it is because when Maytag came out with their N models, they never changed their design. A 1940 would have had a aluminum agitator, the release bar, and pull knob would have been red. Not sure when Matag changed to a red agitator, but would have been sometime after WW2. About 1954 they changed the agitator to black, then about 1966 changed the agitator, release bar, and pull knob to turquoise. Tubs, motors, transmission, gears, pumps, belt, ect all remained the same.
Let us know how you make out.
There are lots of parts out there for these machines because they didn't change. And they contuied manufacturing their model E til 1983.
Someone who know ps these machine better may come by, and know how to decode, and give you a month and year of manufacture, but I know for sure it's not a 1940
