NEED HELP DECODING GE ELECTRIC OVEN MODEL #, PLEASE

Hi Everyone,

Still working through the "bugs" of my post fire rebuild. I have a 50's GE Oven. I was wondering if someone knows how to decode the Model number to get exact Model year, and any other info? The # is:

IJ501Y1M1 33 XM23550

I also need to get a new Bake Element, and was wondering if anyone would know the correct Part #? And a good place to get it from? I tried Modern Parts in OH, but their "books don't go back that far".

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

How about a photo?

 

J501 was a model number used for several years during the mid 1950's for one of GE's wall ovens.

 

Is "XM23550" the Serial Number?  Using the GE table (link attached), the "M" would indicate 1955, but could also be 1971 plus more.  But no reference to "X" as a stand alone month indicator.

 

Is this appliance a wall oven or a range?

Yep, that's a 55!  Bonus, I may have an element for it.... Does yours have the ceramic plug at the back of the element?  I'll dig mine out on the weekend and send you a picture next week.  I've used up all my mobile data for the month shopping for vintage cars... LOL 

 

*EDIT - Louis, I didn't look through all the pictures you had posted, sorry!   I do believe I have that element and even a spare socket for it!  I'll test them this weekend and confirm early next week.

Are you sure you have no need for it? I appreciate the info and your offer. Just let me know what you want for it.

Someone once told me the year was determined by being one digit up from from one of the numbers on the data plate. Is there a listing of Years and Corresponding Letters? Would you know the part number for the element so I can order another in the future?

GE had a pretty easy coding scheme; Frigidaire often had the year as part of the model number (ask the guy who spent LOTS of time last summer with Frigidaire DI57 and DI59 dryers...LOL)

For GE, here's what I know off by heart:

K - 1953

L - 1954

M - 1955

N - 1956

P - 1957

R - 1958

S - 1959

T - 1960

V - 1961

W -1962

X - 1963

Y - 1964

A - 1965

B - 1966

 

After that, well I don't have many more GE appliances that "new"... LOL 

As for the part number,  the parts books I have show Canadian part numbers, which will probably not be found if you search on any US parts sites or eBay.  I'll send you what I have though!

I am aiming for a Chrysler "Forward Look' product - a 57, 58, 59, or 60 model of, in order of preference: DeSoto, Chrysler, Dodge, Plymouth, or Imperial.  I know that my chances of buying a multimillon-prize winning lottery ticket on the day I am driving back from rescuing a turquoise 57 Control Tower set are waaaay better than finding one of those cars, but hey, I can dream...

Bad news, Louis. I found the element but the terminal pins are very badly corroded. The element works but I fear it will overheat the connector block...  I found a much newer GE wall oven element that would fit but you would have to remove the old connector block and attach the supply wires directly to thd element.  I will still dig around in my GE parts books to see if I can find a part number.
