New glass self for vintage refrigertor

Hi all, just wanted to post about the new shelf for the early 50's GE fridge.

I put a pot of turkey soup on the old shelf and I guess it hadn't cooled off enough and sure enough it cracked the old glass. Anyway it was a pretty cheap fix and the new glass is tempered which I guess is standard for a refrigerator nowadays.

Also if one gets a old fridge that is missing the shelves this glass could be a real possibility for an upgraded replacement. Just wanted to throw that out there

Thanks, good advice. Yours looks a lot like my early 1950s GE. I'm missing the drawers and glass shelf but I have the rollers that go under the drawers.

That looks really nice!  I was able to get a piece of glass, similar, from a glass place in the town where I live.  It was for a Frigidaire which had a textured glass shelf. They had a similar textured glass in stock for shower doors. It looked great. They polished and rounded the edges as well. Looked factory!

Just a thought

on your comment with regard to replacing a missing shelf with a glass one. Don't know if it might cause a problem but these old refrigerators didn't have forced circulation. The air circulated inside the cabinet on the simple principle that cold air coming off the evaporator coils fell to the bottom of the cabinet which forced the warmer air up. Replacing a missing wire shelf with a glass one might interfere with the normal circulation of air causing the unit to run longer to maintain a given temperature.

I had a similar experience (but in reverse) a few years ago with a 1950 single door Philco. When I got it the factory plastic drawer which belonged directly under the freezer box was missing. The container of water I had on the middle shelf to check temperature kept forming ice on it no matter how warm I set the control. I found a drawer to replace the missing one and the temperature then raised to where it should have been.

Ken; you're absolutely correct. The glass shelf in my Frigidaire replaced an original glass shelf.  If you block off the entire cabinet with a glass shelf where it came with a mesh shelf, then you'll have problems.  

 

My 1931 Frigidaire has a glass chiller tray under the evaporator. If it's in place, the cabinet will  not be as cold. Since I use this as a beverage fridge, I only place the tray under the evaporator when I am defrosting. This allows the unit to run less and keep the drinks as cold.
