New To Me Dualit Toaster

Last week I found a beautiful used Dualit toaster on ebay for $89.00, including shipping and it was delivered on Friday.  I also found a pair of the Dualit sandwich cages for $25.00 including shipping,  about what the the shipping alone costs for all the other listings.

 

I am so impressed by this wonderful toaster!  I really like the timer, and the control, how fast it toasts and being able to manually lift the toast during the process to see if its ready.  And the  sandwich cages are extra special.  I can make two delicious toasted cheese sandwiches in about 5 mins, from assembling the sandwiches and toasting them for about 3 mins.  And to my mind they taste better than grilling them on the stove.

 

One thing I learned quick from reading the owners manual that preheating the toaster for about a min before starting to toast gives quicker, more even results.

 

I always thought my old Sunbeam T-35 Radiant Control toaster was the best around, but this Dualit has sure changed my mind.

According to the sticker on the bottom of the toaster it was built in 2002 in Great Britain.  It looks just like new, even the inside has seen very little use.  A new one like this runs anywhere from about $189 to as much as $259, so I feel like I got a great deal. 

 

I hope I get as many years of trouble free use as you’ve gotten from yours.

Looks interesting.  How do the sandwich cages work?

Matt here is the instruction manual for the sandwich cage.  You basically lightly butter the outsides of both slices of bread, about 1/2 tsp per side, place a thin slice of cheese on each slice of bread, add a little filling, so far I’ve used cheddar with a deli thin slice of honey ham.  Close the sandwich cage around the sandwich, insert the cages into the preheated toaster slots, set the timer for 3 mins.  The resulting sandwiches are crispy on the outside and soft inside with all the cheese nicely melted.  Very delicious.  And quite an ingenious invention.  

 

Easy to clean, I only get 1 or 2 tiny drops of melted butter in the crumb tray which slides in and out from the front of the toaster.  The cages barely get dirty, wash up easily too.

So it appears you load up the bread and fixings in the frame and then place that in the toaster, does it have a guide or something to hold the frame in place? Ive never been a fan of grilled sandwiches but that unit looks quite interesting.

 

I've never thought about preheating the toaster, might give that at try next time I make toast.  I make a fairly heavy sour dough French bread that take quite a while to toast.  Takes 3-4 minutes to get a nice coloring.  Store bought bread take 1/4 of that time.

Although they have crossed over into the domestic market these toasters are basically commercial models which have been around for very many years, as well as two slot there are also four and six slot versions. The large models have a rocker switch to choose whether you want to use two, four or six slots - and yes, the results are much better if you pre-heat them.

I have one, bought it last year. I'm very happy with it after another toaster bit the dust. I put the sandwich cages in for the picture, but I don't use them very much, I prefer to make cheese sandwiches in a contact grill/panini press.

Best toasters ever, commercial made and domestic as well, had mine 21yrs and just actually about to change the boards , mines a 3 slot , 2 for toast , one sandwich cage , but can use all three for toast, elements are easily available and just slot in...

Congratulations on finding a bargain-priced Dualit! I’ve been tempted a few times, but was concerned about the number of reviews that raved about their 20-year old Dualit, but were disappointed with uneven toasting in their new replacement model. Glad you’re experiencing no such issues.

The sandwich cages are a big draw for me. Hard to beat toasted sandwiches. Thanks for posting the instructions, as well.

Matt,I make all of our bread too, and it does take longer to toast than commercial bread, that why I was looking for a toaster that had plenty of power.  My no knead white or whole wheat bread takes 3 mins to get a nice med. color.  And there are channels in the slots that the toaster cages slide on when they are inserted.

 

Alister, my Dualit has the rocker switch too, to select either 1 or 2 slices, if toasting only one slice its loaded into the far left slot and the elements for that slot are the only ones that heat, just like yours.

 

Eugene, one consideration in making toasted sandwiches this way is that you use much less butter, thereby giving you a healthier sandwich but still with lots of flavor.  If you are interested in getting one on ebay, stake out ebay and keep looking until you find the perfect one, just be patient.  And yes, I’ve read those reviews too.  In fact, I bought a new one at the end of Nov., used it twice, was very disappointed for the price, and returned it.  It didn’t toast evenly, and for that much money I was in no mood to “make it work”.  I noticed that many reviews praised the older models while slamming the newer one.  So, I looked for one of the older models, mine was made in 2002.  Look for one with the red rocker slice selector switch, rather than the newer style that has the round knob to select the number of slices.  Also, checkout the completed/sold listings to get a good idea just what a good price is for the model you covet, then you’ll know for sure when you’ve come across a good deal, then strike while the irons hot.  Good luck.

I've heard good things about the Dualit toasters.

KitchenAid seems to have copied the sandwich racks from Dualit. K-A offers them on some models of their toasters, but strangely they only seem to be on models sold outside of America for some reason. At least I couldn't find any evidence that they have them here.
