New To Me - Hoover "porta power" Quick Broom

Quick trip down to rubbish/recyling area after doing the washing up (purpose was to empty trash), spotted a Hoover vacuum sitting against wall all by its lonesome.

Well me being me (ok a pack rat) couldn't return empty handed, so here I am with a Hoover S2561.

Plugged thing in and it does work, so that's me for you. Happily unlike the upright Hoover found a year or so ago this one is more inconspicuous. Can go right into the broom closet with the Regina electrik-broom and Miele quick vac.

Thing has an "easy to empty" dust cup which is something normally cannot abide. The Regina uses same design as well, but solved problem by hitting my stash of vintage Hoover vacuum bags (think they are for the "Pixe" hand vac) which line that dust cup fine. Later on this when when have a moment will see if same holds true for the Hoover as well.

Thing is cheap bit of tat, don't think will keep it; especially since someone was kind enough to leave an Oreck XL in recycling area. Came complete with a box containing bags and various attachments.

Know many have no love for Oreck vacs, but think it will do nicely as a "porta vac" for when dusting bookcases, entertainment center, etc....

At this point in time.....

Hoover Portapower and QuikBroom were both recycled names. Portapower being their famous half size canister, that was introduced in 1978, and was still around in about 1990, and a incarnation of it is still being made called Portapower, but its commercial. The Portapower replaced the Swingette. The Swingette was introduced in the late 60s, use the same body mold,and basic parts, but had a different motor.

The QuikBroom was officially introduced in 1975, although the body molds of the first couple,and many of the lower tear models were the same as the previous Handi-Vac. The QuikBroom was revamped in about 1987. It then looked a lot like the Regina Electrik Broom, it had a cylindrical cloth bag that wrapped around the body in the same manner, and the motor and such were mounted in the same way. While the original QuikBroom used disposable bags, this variation was bag less like the Regina. Then I am thinking it was the early 2000's when the QuikBroom got its next revamp, into the style of what you have found.

I will post some example sales sheets and such to give a visual of these products, I will try and go in order of mention in my description. Your Hoover broom will be dated. Hoover products made after 1987 will always be dated by the first 4 numbers of the serial number. So for example the first four digits are 1199. The you know your product was made in November of 1999. I hope this background was interesting to you. Glad you saved the little critter!=)

My new vac is Oreck XL (BB-280D), which looks oddly like a Hoover "porta power".

Thanks for the detailed post Spiritof76! Nice of you to include those catalog scans.

In my stash have a case (or two?) of paper filter bags for Hoover "Handi Vac". Use them to line dust cup of the Regina electric boom.

I have the identical Quik-Broom II featured in picture #13.
It was a Goodwill find, and was absolutely filthy.
I've gotten everything looking great, except for the cloth bag.
My intention was to remove it, hand wash it, and reinstall it.
Unfortunately, removing it from the vacuum is beyond my mechanical ability.
So, it doesn't get used.

Going by number of units being offered, and often for little money guess these aren't TOL appliances. *LOL*

No matter, since it was free to me, if it does job am happy. It isn't as if don't have other options; Miele stick vac, Eureka Mighty Mike, Regina EltrikBroom, Hoover upright, and two Eurkea hand vacs (one is a rebadged Montgomery Wards). The last two were cheap and only bought the second to get a supply of scarce NOS bags.

Only paid for the Eurkea hand vacs, and Miele. Everything else including both Hoovers, the Oreck and even a nice vintage Hoover floor/rug cleaner and polisher were all "tip" finds either left in recycling area, or put out on curb.

Not bad for someone who doesn't collect vacuums! *LOL*

I have an S2015 like in pics 9 and 12. Found it at Habitat, it looked practically brand new. The way the handle attaches with a ring just like the floor nozzle was interesting to me. It didn't come with a bag and they seem to be somewhat hard to find, so I just wiped it down and never used it any.

I seem to remember my mother having one when I was a child.

The hard body models with clear dust cup I think I started seeing in the late 1990s, probably 1997 or so. The onboard hose/crevice tool I found interesting.

Yeah, Hoover kept that same basic model all through the 70s,and 80s. They just reissued it ever year. The early ones have the old style Hoover cord and smaller plug, and the old Hoover toggle switch. Then the mid run ones from about 1976- 1982 or so had the new square hoover plug, but still had the old toggle switch. Then finally the last of them have the new micro, slider switch as well as the new square plug,and also they then had the grey/silver information tag, that listed all the specs,including bag type. As afar as I know they were still offering that model in about 1986.

The bags for that can be found at ANY True-Value, or vacuum cleaner shop. Hoover is still making them. However, the bags for the higher end models with the "cassette" bag changer have been discontinued. Much to my dismay, might I add. I have 3 models that are the Cassette models. Luckily, I went to my local True-Value just in time to buy MANY MANY genuine packs for $1.00 each. I now have enough to last me another century...LOL

Interesting. Mine seems to be a very later version from what you describe. It has the square plug, sliding switch (red) and the silver information label. However, it is old enough that it doesn't have the date code in the serial number.

I remember around the time I got mine there was an older yellow and beige model there that had the flip switch and smaller plug and looked 60s or early 70s.

I'll have a look at True Value sometime, there's one in the town north of here. Ace Hardware used to sell a lot of the older Hoover bags, but most were aftermarket last I looked (it's been a few years though). I used to get a lot of my bags like Hoover type J at Habitat for cheap, both genuine and DVC aftermarket. I'll have a look next time I'm there and see if they still have them.
