A few years ago I scored an Oster "Meat Grinder" with it's can opener attachment at our local swapmeet. A little seach on ebay revealed that there were meat grinder and ice cube crusher attachments available, both of which I eventually found.

Never really had an interest or need for grinding meat, but a few months ago we rented the DVD "Food Inc" and it was quite interesting what goes into hamburger meat. Needless to say, we stopped buying hamburger.

I recently hatched the idea of grinding up our own, using the Oster, and our first run was with some New York steaks that we bought for 50% off.

2 small steaks wound up making 6 patties and man are they good!

I sometimes grind my own hamburger, I use my Kitchenaid grinder attachment. I was not happy with my early results, but Martha did a segment on her show some years back and she indicated she double grinds her hamburg. Once I started doing that I was very happy with the results. I generally just buy some inexpensive chuck roast, roughly cube it up and double grind. I'll do 6 or 7 pounds at a time and freeze it either in pattys or in 1 lb. packs.

Didn't think about the double grind trick, although it seemed to do pretty good with one pass.

I'll wind up using less expensive cuts too, but it's too tempting to when I see new york or filet mignon for a couple bucks per steak.

Really enjoyed the burger though. Good flavor, not greasy or fatty at all, and it didn't leave me with that weird bloated feeling that I seem to get from the premade stuff.

And sure, I could just ask the butcher at the grocery store to grind something that I picked out......but how much fun would that be.

I hadn't given it much thought, but I may try grinding some meat using the attachment for our KA. I actually like coarse ground burgers and one pass through the KA might produce exactly what I prefer.

That Oster is way cool!

I also like to grind the meat myself-its fresh and I know I CLEANED my grinder.I use one I bought from Cabelas sporting goods.Makes GREAT burgers. The Caabelas grinder is metal-don't like the plastic KA grinder-its really harder to clean-the grease and fats from the meat are harder to clean from it.And if I feed it hard-have fears the plastic barrel will break.I can feed the Cabelas one hard-no fears it has a cast steel zinc plated barrel, hopper, and auger. The blade and screen are SS.I only need to pass the meat thru either the Cabelas or KA grinder only once-twice its just too fine.

Some meats

I have to grind myself....can't get ground chicken at my supermarket for love nor money.

I use my KitchenAid processor, but very carefully, never loading it very full, and pulsing very sharply, and it works well.

Also, since the nearest stand-alone butcher shop went out of business (alas!!!!) I have to grind my own "chili grind" beef.
