I believe the quality that makes these old ads so compelling to study is the same factor that made them jump out at readers and potential customers: the fact that the illustrated content was done by illustrators, not photographers so the pictures sort of jump off the page at the reader. The rest of the illustrations in the periodicals were created in the same way which is what made the colors and the degree of shading created by corners, the pattern of light on a wall above and below a lamp shade and from one side of of a hallway to the other in room interiors look so rich and things like Christmas decor so magical. Think of the quality of light in an illustration of Christmas Tree lights versus the quality of light in a photograph of the same subject.
