New Year Fireworks Display in London

Happy New Year, everyone!

Here is the official BBC recording of the New Year fireworks display in Central London. This uses the BBC’s new iPlayer.

The first clip you will see is of the BBC’s ident (graphics) for BBC One, which lasts just under 30 seconds. You will have to watch this, and then the second part will play automatically, where you can then immediately skip to the display, which start around 0:44.44 into the video.

If the iPlayer does not work outside the UK, then you can watch a clip of the display on YouTube – see the next message from me for the link. I’ve put the link to the BBC’s iPlayer because the quality of the clip is excellent, though the YouTube one is pretty good, too.

I think the best bit of the display is towards the end – it gets quite lively!

This is something that the UK has only done since about 2003/04 or so – we used to have no ‘official’ celebrations in London at all.

And just over half-way through the display, you may think it is just about to end, as there is a slight pause and what appears to be the end.

But just wait and see what happens…

Just spectacular! Was this the way London always does New Years or was 2008 special for some reason?
Hmmm maybe for vacation next year........

Happy New Year!

We’ve had fireworks as good as this every year since about 2003/04, and I think it still shocks many Britons (and others!) because we don’t often do ‘big’ things like this!

As I said earlier, there was literally nothing done before 2003/04 or so, even though members of the public used to gather in London.

I enjoy any fireworks, but I do sit in awe at these!
