I've casually kept my eye out for a Whirlpool or Kenmore belt drive for a while now and don't notice any popping up on the local craigslist. On the other hand, Maytags pop up all the time and even the occasional GE filter flo. Are these machines long gone, or am I just having bad luck in my neck of the woods?

Dream Machine

I agree. Hardly ever see them. Just today's POD. That would be my "Dream" Machine. Would love to find one exactly like that with the Manual Lint Filter!

Belt Drive WPs have not been built since around 1986

GE FFs were built almost a decade longer and MT DC machines almost 20 years longer, yes time takes its toll the odds of finding many good BD machine is getting smaller and smaller, that said we just picked up a good KM BD from 1982 if you want to come get it, it does have an outer tub leak but runs well otherwise.

I do see a lot of the dependable care Maytags. Oddly enough, I see even more of the 1980s machines judging by the control panels. I've never seen one of the 90's filter flos pop up. It surprises me that no KM belt drives sell since quite a few houses in my area have them.

Beltdrives

There are many beltdrives out there,a sh**load in fact.Keep looking on Craigssh**list and you will find one. There are many in shoppers square to be found as well. From personal experience it is worth getting the one you want and driving to get it which is fun, half the fun is the hunt or have it shipped which is what I do. I like your user name very catchy.

What are you using for search criteria? If you are putting something in like "belt driver washer" the only ones you would find are ones listed by members perhaps. Your search is going to be going through many "washer/washing machine" listings.

No More Belt Drives

Hey Gordon,

I have sent you two texts thru the AW message center.  I am still waiting for your reply on how best to proceed with repairs on my Kenmore Limited Edition Washer.  Did you receive the messages?  Message center shows messages sent to your e-mail address, but me and tech do not always mix.  Thanks for your willingness to help.  Tommy

I have seen a couple of Whirlpool/Kenmore belt drive washers on Craigslist in SoCal, but Maytags seem to be EVERYWHERE in SoCal. Maytag must have dominated the washer market back in the day since they sold so many. I have seen a couple of GE FilterFlo washers, but I always see Maytags on Craigslist.

One of the joys and frustrations

Of collecting is just this - there are dry periods and then there are periods of way too much!

I passed on an appliance about five years ago. The car was nearly full, we had a long drive home, it was $12.00 not $10.00 as usual and I didn't want to encourage the trend at Goodwill to raise prices.....

With the result that I didn't see a single, solitary one of that particular appliance again until two days ago.

I collect Presto pressure cookers. Would love to find a 2qt. Passed on a 2.5qt. fifty years ago - sure I'd find millions more of them.

Well, I found two this summer. After looking continuously and diligently for fifty years.

Your belt-drive will show up. One suggestion: Expand your search parameters. Most non AW members haven't a clue that the newest Whirlpools are belt-drive, most have no clue that all were belt-drive until the mid-80's. ALL have no clue how old their appliances really are - I am looking into a Flair this coming week. It's a mid-1954 model!*

*While it's true there are a few early ones from '61 with date stamps of 1959 on the parts, there just weren't any on the market in the 1950s.
