I received a very thoughtful and kind email off-list from Jeff moparguy, alerting me to an Amana fridge of exactly the right era, exactly the right trim, and in what appears to be very nice condition.

The problem? Dead Leprechaun Green, a.k.a. Avocado. If this one was White, I'd be very excited.

Anyway, a pic and a link to the CL ad are below, in case anyone's trying to complete a set of Avocado majors. In White, this would be exactly what I'm looking for.

The other hurdle is the asking price - $300. For a forty-year-old basement fridge in a color that's not one of the popular ones.

Oh, well. It's in Detroit - maybe at that price, the house goes with it. ;-)

Barbara Eden. One of the reasons I liked watching that show.

Phil:

The one you posted is much later than the Avocado one - it's like mid-'80s. The drawers are smoke-tint plastic instead of the beige-gold color of the Avocado unit. Also, yours doesn't have an icemaker, which makes the freezer look very different.

The handles on yours are not the same as earlier Amanas, either - they're not that "L'-shape. At least they're black - I cannot abide white plastic handles.

P.S., Phil:

Both these Amanas have reversible doors, so the current hand is not an issue.

I know the handles on the Avocado one don't appear to be reversible-door handles, but they are. Until bought out by Whirlpool, Amana did a pretty darn good job of resisting the "cheapest way out" design ethos practiced by most manufacturers. By this time, "cheapest way out" has been going on so long you can't tell one brand from another - they're all blander than a Mr. Rogers lookalike contest.

"they're all blander than a Mr. Rogers lookalike con

which about summarizes the reason I have always liked the 60's (especially) and some 70's appliances...

Mr. Rogers - at least he hung his clothes to dry.
