That fridge is a 1953 General Electric Refrigerator/Freezer

If it were a 1954 model it would have the revolving turn out shelves...PAT COFFEY

I would so be going after that fridge if it were in my area. It does still have latches though, but I'm resigned to not being choosy anymore when it come to items like this.

Spin Shelves

I thought the turn-around shelves came out in 56? I know in early 50 or 51 they tried the magnetic strip for the door closure.Went back to the good handle latch. Bobby

Yeah Ben, but the older GE's were so much more fun!!

Speaking of old GE's, check out my restored 1948 GE combo!

Rick - I don't recall any photos from your restoration efforts. Would LOVE to see them.

I've been using my '51 GE Combo as a daily driver now for about 4 months. It is the 8 cubic foot model without any door shelves (besides the unused butter storage).

I absolutely love it, but couldn't imagine using it with more than two people in a modern household.

We have another fridge down the basement that we use for the "overflow" and there are two people living here.

I have a hand held hard bound 1954 GE appliance catalog...

and in it it shows the TOL Double and single door fridges with the revolving turn out shelves. What you all seem not to realize is that when fridges like these were made they were top of the line and considered big enough to hold food for a family of four where the wife shopped once a week for food. Also circa 1950 we do not have the variety of frozen foods to choose from that we do now, that makes a diference believe me....PAT COFFEY

Hey Pat-I agree about the convenience foods. Growing up, we had (and I still have) an International Harvester fridge; capacity was never and issue. BUT, nearly everything was made from scratch (and Mama hated to cook). There was even room for Pop's Falstaff in, er, quantity!

Freezer

Also alot of families had seperate chest or stand up freezers.People ate lots of leftovers. They shopped daily for fresh veggies. My relatives and us got along very well with small GEs and Coldspots, they seemed to hold enough.Id like to have some of those good meals now. Bobby
