I have been looking for a light to go over the table in the 50's kitchen. I really want a hanging one but I can't find anything! I looked at a few pulldown lights which I really like but everyone says there 60's. The only thing that I've found from the 50's is the Sputnik lights and that to me won't look to cool in a kitchen. So! Anyone seen anything? It really needs to be stainless, chrome, aluminum or of course pink. I can't even find the right style!!! If anyone has some pictures to post from a kitchen something, anything!! HELP!

A search for lighting catalogs on ebay turned up several options and you might also look in issues of Sears and Wards catalogs from that time period as well. I like the sputnik inspired fixtures very well but they may not provide the 'direct' lighting you'd want over a table. A trio of glass-shade pendant fixtures would be very cool too.

I checked around and don't have any really good pics of lighting options you'd be interested in - mostly colonial/traditional inspired things...

Here are a few fixtures under 1950's lighting...

Bethann, my aunt & uncle built a new house in 1958. It had a pull-down light over the breakfast room table. Friends of my parents bought a house built in 1962. Breakfast room light was also a pull-down. (And to keep you feeling good, the kitchen was all Frigidaire). My parents closed in a screen porch (aorund 1956 or so) and turned that into a den and eating area. Also had a pull down light over the table.

Greg's got good taste.... I've had my eye on the Jantzen for a while (check the link). Other options if you wanted a retro hanging pendant style would be IKEA, though their catalogs don't show all of their new stuff. I've had good luck in the past watching the yard sales and thrift shops for the kitchen lamps with the "egg" so you can pull down/retract the fixture. A little new wire if the other looks a tad worn would help too.

Now if someone could find me a sub-$350 dual-inverted cone wall fixture : )

Lamp/Light Input:

I don't know if you would have any places in your area like I've seen before, but there is a real neat Old-Fashioned Hardware Store, called "Hippo" Hardware. It is located in Portland, Oregon and it is 3-Floors High. I've never seen anything like it around where I live, here in Sacramento, CA but let me tell you, this place has almost everything for Renovating that you could ever imagine. It was thought of originally by the Owner's of going around areas when older Houses, etc were being either torn down or Re-Modeled to bring them up to now from then. These Guys would go to the places, besides going to numerous Yard Sales, Flea Markets and watching the Clasified's in the local Paper for sites. There are quite a few very old houses, dating back to the 1700's and 1800's in Portland, Oregon and a lot of the people want to Renovate, with items of the era of their house, rather than updating to current times of looks.

I just thought that this might be of some help, not only for you, but for others here in our wonderful Appliance Club. I could easily stay in that place for hours and hours, just checking out what they have available. I've even looked for smaller items, from Door Knockers, to older Wood-Framed Windows, to Lighting Fixtures and Lamps, besides almost everything else necessary to do Repairs. Maybe you can locate some kind of place similar to this in your area. "Good-Luck" with your search in findings for some great Lights/Lamps for your Decor...

Peace and best to everyone, Steve

light fixture

Bethann - That is a great light fixture. I remember our metal pull down. For some unknown reason, it would occasionally shock the heck out of us when we touched it.

For purely personal reasons, I would go with the "Venus" fixture on Gre's list. LOL

The place that Sacto mention in Portland is awesome. Could definitely spend too much time and too much money in there!

Good luck finding what you want!

Venus

Thanks everyone!

More than likely everything will probably come from Rejuvenation. It's killing me that it's not vintage but, as much lighting as I will need it's the only way I can get everything to match! One of these days maybe I'll get the damn thing done! Yes, I'm a pot watcher!
