How does one remove the agitator from a Frigidaire Rapidry 1000? I assume the bolt in the middle has to be removed but before I destroy anyting I thought I'd consult with the experts.

were not gonna laugh.. the nut you see it what must come off.. i had been told that you could use your left foot in the tub to help brase things so the nut would be easier to remove. or by filling the tub with really hot water would help loosen it. but i ended using a vice grips at the end of the shaft by the coupler and letting it rest against i think it was the motor as a brace. but for me it was a total bitch..just hang in there cause i know there are better ideas than mine out there. did you find a new boot for the machine you might end up needing one.. so do we get to see pic of the whole machine??

under the rubber fin of the cone is a rubber boot that keeps the water in the tub. if you raise the cone all the way up stick you hand under the fin and feel toward the center youll feel the rubber boot. do you have a service book to look at?
 
No, I'm looking for one if anyone has an extra to sell. When I lift the agitator manually, I can hear something inside of it rattling. I'm hoping that I'll find a coin or something not supposed to be there and this will solve the problem.

What's the best impact wrench to get? I am going to get one soon and have no idea of sizes, etc.... PLEASE advise. Thanks! Mark
 
Hi Ken,

I had the same problem with my '78 1-18 last May. The pulsator nut was IMPOSSIBLE to remove by hand. I even tried the "foot-in-the-tub" technique and it was somewhat awkward with the 1-18; I think with the shallower tub of the Rollermatic it will be more effective. I then got my impact wrench out and that worked wonders; I didn't even have to hold the tub! Definitely have one handy when working on these as you will use them quite often...I know I did!

It's probably best to get a hold of the appropriate Frigidaire Tech-Talk for this model line (what is the model lettering of your machine?), but the Repair-Master for the Rollermatics will also work as it focuses mainly on the solid-tub Rollermatic mechanism, even though the 1-18 is covered somewhat in there as well. However, try not to confuse the 1-18 diagrams with the solid-tub diagrams as they are two completely different mechanisms. Even then, Greg N. was telling me there were even different variations with the solid-tub Rollermatic mechanism down the model line!

After the agitator is out, you will see the water bellows below it. Check for any rips or holes. From what I've found, the bellows seals are made of heavy-duty rubber and hardly ever "wear down", so unless a nail gets in it, they will usually be in good shape and won't need replacement. If you want to remove the water bellows to examine the oil bellows, a set of Frigidaire bellows pliers is the best bet to remove the snap ring holding it on, but they're getting pretty hard to find. I heard one of those worm gear hose clamps will work, though. The rattling noise you hear is coming from somewhere in the transmission; probably the agitate arm/shaft/wheel assembly. Keep us posted on the progress; these machines are fairly easy to work on so I don't think you will have a problem.

Since you mentioned it, I bought a used Ingersoll-Rand 1/2" drive extended impact wrench and a Mac Tools deep impact socket set over a year ago, and I can't begin to tell you how many times that has helped out! I recommend a good 1/2" IR wrench and either Snap-On or Mac sockets. Avoid the new "no-name" tools on eBay advertised at $50 for the whole set; those scream JUNK. Extended-drive and deep sockets are the way to go as they give you a lot of extra "reach" needed, such as when you're taking the pulsator nut off of a 1-18. Will reach all the way down into the Jetcone with no problem!
