Ingemar, That was about the height of popularity of front loaders in the U.S., by the early 1960s market share began declining--largely due to some supposed marketing scare tactics by GE to get people to give up their Bendix washers.
The Westinghouse pair in the commercial is my all-time favorite westinghouse pair. I think it was the model L110. Jetcone has a set of these. Someone else in the club MAY have another one of these washers. The washer had push-button wash temp and rinse temp buttons which were color-coded as to how hot to cold the 5 water temperature options for wash was and the same with 3 rinse temepratures. The color was also "tied" to type of fabric and the timer dial had corresponding color sections which lit up according to fabric. (some of this I remember from age 7 to 10, neighbors across the street had this washer, bought used in like 1959 or 1960 from some other neighbors.

I do find it "interesting" they chose to compare the wash action of the Laundromat with that of the top loader by Norge, which recently mentiuoned in another thread, had the worst rollover of any toploader of its day, but was still ranked very high in consumer reports. They should have also included something like a GE and a Frigidaire, more realistic comparison.
Yes Bob you are right, a comparison with a GE or a Frigidaire vould be fair. But in this video the difference between the two

Ingemar, no front loading washers made in the U.S. did not have reverse tumbling until the latest products of front loading ahers starting being put out for sale on the market around 1997. The Bendix, Westinghouse Laundromat, and all the combination washer/dryerrs from Bendix, Westinghouse, GE, Whirlpool, Norge, and others only tumbled in one direction. And the amount of water you saw in the video in the Westinghouse was very typical of frontloaders from the first Bendix. Now, the combination washer/dryers made by Whirlpool and sold by Sears under the Kenmore brand only filled with a very shallow amount of water in the tub and used a turbo jet spray (filter stream) the clothes passed through as they tumbled.
I wish Robert had a video of his 1958 Whirlpool Combination Washer/Dryer with the filter stream posted in the "see it wash" section on the home page, but there isn't one.
I would just LOVE LOVE LOVE to get those demonstration washers!!!!

The wash drum seems huge on the westinghouse, dont know about it holding 9lbs of washing looks like it could hold about 20 lol... oooh i wish we had the westinhouse laundromat washer an dryer set in the uk, i love the desing of them and the simplicity of them
I don't know about the UK, but I know that in Italy in the '50 were on sale Westinghouse washers under the name of FIAT. On Ebay you can see an old print about FIAT appliances.

That's because although its blurry, it seems the whole thing was faked. The Westinghouse looks fishy in its set up, they would have had to make a Plexiglas inner tub and a Plexiglas outer tub cover. But it looks way over sized compared to the Laundromat cylinders of that era.

I think we should re-create those demo machines, they probably wouldn't be able to withstand the pressures of spinning but how fun!

Robby, we did have those models here, they where imported and sold here...I have an Ideal Homes mag from the 60`s of Adam Faiths house and he has a complete Westinghouse kitchen, ovens , hobs, sink, refrigerator and the washer & dryer in the kitchen...must search for it!!!

Yeah, well if you load-up an old FF too much the roll-over will almost stop. That old straight-vane Activator just did not work well with a stuffed tub.
What she neglected to say, and what one could be "sure of" is that the 9lb load pictured tumbling in the Westy, would come out in a chain of twisted clothes 15 feet long or something.
I'd take my chances with the GE.

Cheers for clearing that up Robert. I thought it looked a bit rigged bur didnt think they could get away with it. still looks cool though i want one lol
