All things considered with new dish washers Im thinking of first trying a used one for the folks as it would see limited use.

Here are two Im considering. Are they pretty much comparable? Im assuming the Kenmore is WP built? If I had any preference it would be towards the WP because of the mechanical timer.

I Have to lean toward the Kenmore, even though it has electronic controls, because it has more cycle options and lacks that awful tower in the lower rack... Loading should be much more flexible with the open lower rack.

have a somewhat similar Kenmore.

We bought our house in summer if 2012 and it came with bol/mol Kenmore SS appliances and the dishwasher looks similar inside to both of those. It has the telescoping water sprayer thing and reminds me of all the older Whirlpool dishwashers we had as kids.
Sister says it cleans better then the other old style one at our old rental that was probably a early 80s model I would fix as things rarely broke.
It's nothing special but cleans well, is fairly loud but typical for that style, and has worked fine for three years so far.
The latch isn't as sturdy as the older versions but has always worked. Ours has the simple rotory pull to start dial like all the old Whirlpools I've had or seen.

Either one that you look at are good machines. I had one similar to the whirlpool model but it had a couple of more options on it but the same wash system. No matter what I threw at it ---it was a good machine and everything came out clean.  The electronic Kenmore does have a little bit more loading flexibility since it doesn't have the spray arm tower in the lower rack, but it has the cycle "sense" feature which adapts the cycles time to how dirty the load is.

If it were me.....Mom & Dad choice would be the Whirlpool, for myself (meaning you) I'd splurge and go with the Kenmore.

These are great

I had a Kenmore at a house I rented in 1997 to 2000 before I moved. The house was 3 years old so I'm guessing the dishwasher was from 1994. It was mechanical and a Kenmore with not a lot of options, but that thing cleaned so freaking good!

Does anyone know how the "clean" light works on older Ultra Wash units? My UWII has lights for on, heating and clean, but I can't get the clean light on. It may be that manually advancing the timer is screwing it up, but I want to see it light! If you consult the google it goes into great detail about later models and codes. Mine is way too old for that.

the clean light should come on once the dishwasher has run thru a complete cycle. Once you opened the DW the clean light would go off.

Clean Light Operation [ on WP built DWs ]

On models with a mechanical timer the light is turned on by the timer at the end of the cycle, it will go off when you unlatch the door but will come back on if you latch the door again, to turn it off if you want to leave the door latched you must click the timer ahead one click.

Electronic control DWs the clean light will cancel out when you open the door the first time after a complete cycle.

Thanks for the information guys. I happened to find an older Whirlpool made Kenmore (not Ultrawash) close to home and got it two days ago. The seller said it came out of his mothers house. And he thought it was about four years old and it wasn't used that much. I didn't think it could be that new as it has a mechanical timer and actual buttons on the left for wash selection. I was surprised to see it didn't have an upper wash arm. Just a lower arm with the pop up tower. But for $60.00 I thought Id give it a try. After I got it home and was able to inspect it better it doesn't look to me the racks, especially the upper, have the capacity (height) our GE does. The numbers are model 6651744993, serial FF4503985. If I understand correctly the serial # would indicate a build date of 45th week of 1996. The seller stated if I had any trouble he would take it back. I contacted him with the age and told him I really wasn't looking for something that old. He said I could bring it back but it couldn't be that old.

Having never had a Whirlpool or Kenmore dishwasher I have no experience as to capacity compared to older GE's. I got looking more closely at the picture I posted above of the WP and see that its almost identical to the Kenmore I got except it has the extra wash arms. Can I expect the WP to not have the capacity our GE does?
