Ling Temco Vogt over counter D.W: I suppose for a cramped NY city, etc. kitchen in a home of one or two was perfect. LTV's main business was steel. We had a small facility here until the 80's.

Certainly more convenient at eye or counter level to load and unload.
In today's much larger kitchens it seems like a great idea. But nobody is going to deviate from the standard now.
