Yay - this is great news! The '58 Duo manual covers a pretty big group of surviving Bendix Duomatics that haven't had original service doctrine available online. While there were electro-mechanical changes (switching relays in the 1953 CCR to a motor start switch in the 1955 CER for the dryer current), outside of the usual control panel and door boot differences, the basics covered in this '58 manual apply across all '53 through '57 electric Bendix and Philco/Bendix Duos.

And, there are some interesting transmission changes made between the '59 models and '60 models if you've never spent much time around either the 33" or the smaller 27" units. It's worth taking a look!

Magic Heater

I'm afraid that doing anything to the heater involves removing the tub back. The heater shape is hard to describe. It fits behind the tub, is curved on the bottom to match the curve of the outer tub and then curves back in to meet near the center to where you see the terminals come out through the back. It is sort of shaped like a big smile.

You might be able to remove the lint strainer/pump protector and use a flexible lighted scope to see if you can see what's hitting. It could be something caught on the heating element and projecting far enough so that the drum is hitting it.

Scraping Heater In A Duomatic

In addition to Toms good suggestions I would disconnect the power leads to the heater if you are still using the machine so it does not short out if the drum wears through the heater sheath.

 

If the heater is still working you may be able to take the drum back off and reposition and reshape the heater and save it.

I am not using this machine I haven't even plugged it in yet it is in my garage at my future home the hotel costa plente. I was afraid the tub back was going to have to come off and not looking forward to that.It sounds as if the end of a fill hose is dragging on the tub as you turn it.
