Remember the $1.98 Beauty Contest?
Speaking of all it should do for that price, does anyone remember the General Electric Theater on television? They used to show experimental appliances because "Progress Is Our Most Important Product." One such product in the early 60s was a meal system with a freezer that had coded sections for frozen casseroles. There was some transportation chamber that connected the freezer to the oven. There was a keypad that they punched in the location in the freezer and the time and temperature and the machine moved the casserole from the freezer to the oven. They showed the set up at the start of the hour-long show and started the casserole cooking. By the end of the show, the casserole was all cooked, but the whole thing was the equivalent of culinary and primitive computer-like showing off. It was not a practical invention. It was huge and when you consider the energy efficiency of the freezer and the oven there was no practicality to it, but it made for a GEE WHIZ presentation of industrial masturbation.
