Help Support AutomaticWasher.org:

I just saw these on e-bay

OMG!!! I love this set!!! I would love to have these!!I just do not have the means of getting to them. i would suggest someone get them right away before they get snached up!! I will envy them for it. They are just to FAB-----( Ritchie breaths in deeply and passes out)!

These machines aren't from 1957 as seller advertises. 1957 would be a Model 140 AMP design, and then the early helical-drive machines similar to Rick's pair. Both have a handle in the lid instead of the familiar notched lid like this one. Looks like an A700, so the earliest it could be is from 1959.

They're both very nice machines and in PINK no less; I hope someone saves them!!!

WestyTL,
You are on the ball. They are actually 142's, from around 1960 or 61. Washer is the modern helical drive with revised motor carriage, dryer is the typical Halo of Heat. Me thinks the cabinets have been repainted. The original kickplates would have been battleship grey. Very nice models.

You guys are right those are 1959 or 1960 models, I believe in 1961 they changed the glass panel to the later gold design as opposed to red and the buttons went from black to gray.

The 142 was first introduced in 1958, but it had the double lid like the old AMP's without the water level switch inside it. 1959 was the first year of the single panel lid.

Hi Robert,

Just a quick question--would this eBay machine then be an A700 or a 142? Inquiring minds want to know...I thought the 142's never had the notched lid (just the AMP-style), and heard the A700 debuted in 1959. I could definitely be wrong though...

Oops, I can't believe I misread Bobby's post!!

So now the question is, did they make the 142 and the A700 at the same time, or was the A700 the 142's successor?

This is getting more and more fun...

I'm not sure Austin, but I believe that machine is a 142. My Maytag knowledge ends at the 142 though. Greg will know, Greg where are you?

Ms, Mamie Maytag

This is my 142S from 1958.

Austin, you sure don't miss much. I looked at these from work, and figured that this set was a year older than mine. Did not even notice that the washer lid handle was the later type. Thank you bringing that to our attention.

Original paint photo.Set as they were found

Someone had thought the ebay set was repainted, because the toe kick area was painted to match with the cabinet. Here is a photo of my set before they were restored. Note the toe kick area is pink here also. Was it only the white colours that had the toe kick area painted silver on these older style Maytag cabinets? Anyone know, just for the heck of it?

Hi All!
My 142 is white, with the grey toeboard. Must be only the white ones came that way. The A700 came in 1961, after the 142. The only change was the gold dot glass panels and the grey buttons and dial. The 142 had several revisions, from the two piece lid and electric lid switch to the single, modern style lid with a mechanical switch, and from the pivoting motor to the modern spring slide motor carriage. The last A700's had a rinse temp selector on the top of the console.

OK you experts, now tell me something...

I bid on these(in the vain hope of building my vintage collection from basically nothing). Now if I happen to win them, how do I get them back to Connecticut? I'm not in a position right now to drive to Colorado.

Don Shier is bringing his 142 (white) down here this weekend for a makeover training course, his has the lined glass panel and one-piece porcelain lid but still has the pivot motor and tension spring. I have the brochure for this model line and it shows the colored machines with the gray toe-kick so who knows? Could have been an extra painting step they elimnated early on with the colors.

No matter the details, this pink set on ebay is beautiful! Hopefully another glass panel can be found for the dryer...and an electric element ;-)

Bajaespuma,
I am killing myself laughing. In my younger days I would have walked to CO and carried them back. Worry about transport after you grab 'em. Someone here will help you figure out the logistics. Good luck, they are beautiful.

The ebay seller email me a pic inside of the Maytag washer! I hope someone get this washer.

Ok...as the owner of these fine machines I'm asking for

I listed these on Ebay because a local repair guy (whose had them for quite awhile) said he could rebuild them, however he since told us he could not and so my wife broken heartedly agreed to get rid of them...however thanks to a simple question to my listing I have since found you folks, needless to say We would love to keep these units If someone could simply tell us who could rebuild them etc...there were our first machines as a couple and work better than our brand new front loaders...not to mention I always wanted to be able to hook them up as night lights and when asked the inevitable question "Do they work?" I'd love to say "Ya wanna see them?"
I know they have one bid on them and I would be asking for your forgivness if I ended up pulling them.
Thanks for all the help,
Tim

does not matter if they work or not, they are beautiful works of art,or museum pieces. If they were mine I would never part with them.took me years of hard looking to find my maytag like that.Don

Tim,
I don't think anyone who appreciates fine vintage appliances would mind if you kept them. There are so many good and knowledgeable folks in this club, you could easily find out how to rebuild them.
