Ok, I've finally got to ask. How did the Tappen Dual Drench Washing Action actually work?

Short answer: It really didn't

Envision tires on a wet freeway, and you have the principle. The cylinder picked up water while spinning and hurtled it at the dishes. First, in one direction (to hit the left side of the machine), then, in the other (ditto for the right side).

According to those who had them, it was exceedingly quiet and extremely capable at not cleaning almost anything in the machine.

Neat idea, though. :-)

I've also heard that some of these machines actually used hand-dishwashing liquid and just dispensed a metered amount during each wash. Can anyone verify that?

Nate, your description was right-on. An O'Keefe & Merrit labeled version of this design was in our house we bought fall of 1961--it got pulled out and sent to our old house since the Waste King was only about a year or so old and a far better dishwasher. Friends moved into a house in 1963 which had the same BOL as our house did, but had the Tapapn brand on it. Yes, it was very quiet. Was abysmall at anything cleaning. This BOL model didn't have separate racks. The top & bottom racks werre connected and you loaded through the opening in the top rack, thus capacity was horrible. The BOL timier had normal wash, short or light wash, rinse & hold, and plate warmer. The "cylinder" rotated during dry cycle to move air currents.

Tappan!

We had family friends that had this same exat dishwasher. I can't comment on the cleaning cause they always rinsed first. But it was extremly quiet for a dishwasher of it's time. Didn't they go to 2 spray arms later on.

Thanks guys

Thanks for the info. I had always wondered.

Sorry it took so long to get back to thank everyone for the responses...I was camping at a Steam Engine Show in Pawnee, OK over the weekend and got a wonderful taste of the season's of the year in the weather department...twisters, hail, high winds, freezing rain, blistering sun, the only thing that we didn't see was snow! Oh, well, maybe next year!

Hey duetboy

Come on over to Kansas, we can show you all the seasons.

In the last week we had Rain, Hail, Tornadoes, temps in the 30's with blizzard conditions and temps in the upper 80's.

Damn Global warming.

Don't worry about Kansas....

I grew up in a mile west of Derby. I know the seasons...that's why I'm in Arkansas now!

The Anal Retentive version of Kansas!

1987 Tappan dishwasher

We had a very noisy 1987 BOL GE-built Tappan dishwasher for several years(got replaced by a Whirlpool DU930PWP).
