I wonder how many employees of the coin op dry cleaning centers died of illnesses brought on by exposure to the chemicals. I read that the final exhaust from the dry cleaning machines, while sent to the outside was sucked back in through the stores' gas dryers and formed an acidic compound that put holes in clothes.

Employees of dry cleaning plants or such businesses long have known increased cancer rates among other diseases related to exposure to solvents.

Higher cancer rates didn't just affect employees of dry cleaning plants, but often entire area where plant/shop was or is located. This explains why former dry cleaning plants or similar places make up large number of federal superfund sites. PERC, benzene and other solvents either vaporized into air or leaked/seeped/disposed of into ground have contaminated not just soil beneath/surrounding dry cleaning plants but often adjacent properties as well.
