The beginning of the GE "filter flo" popularity. GE washers were good machines in the 50's. They washed, rinsed and spun out pretty well. They also held a decent size load of laundry too. Even though they were solid tub machines, they had the "filter flo" filtration system that not only did a fair job of filtering, it proved to be a good sales advantage over other machines at the time. They continued the "filter flo" through the perforated tub model that came out next and added a "mini basket" to many of the middle to TOL models through the 80's. The "filter flo" system lasted a very long time and there are people today that say it is a really good filtration system on a washing machine.

It may have been the best filtration system ever, except you still had to clean a filter and store it out of the way when not in use. A lot of clumsy people bent those metal ones up. They were serious water-hogs, though. Thankfully, unless on well-water, nobody much cared as water was plentiful and cheap back in the day.

People who had big, furry dogs and cats loved them, and they did clean well.

My Aunt and Uncle

Bought one of these for their new house in 56, it replaced a Laundromat that wouldn't fit in the kitchen, before they re modeled in 62 the washer was beside the range in the kitchen, the washer was moved downstairs in 62 beside the WH dryer, it was used until 67 when they were replaced by a 606 Maytag they used 33 years, we got the WH dryer and used it until the early 80s.My Aunt liked the WH washer much better than the GE....especially after it flooded the kitchen one time..LOL, I liked these GEs, but they have 2 problems, these don't have the tub brake like perforated tub models, and usually they get to where the tub slips backward when washing, then they have a different pump that is about impossible to find now days.

Yeah, I've had a few of them. Robert P. Has one of them here in Roanoke. It got a new tub seal and pump. The tranny is still finicky and sometimes the tub indexes a bit. Other than the usual problem of machines from this era having small tub capacity, I thought they were pretty good. The tub on these does coast to a stop. So did SQ, Philco/Dexter, and Hotpoint of this era. Maybe others as well.
