You could get away with using Tide in the solid tub GE because the suds just floated over the tub rim and into the sump. During the drain, there was a pause after the water had been spun out of the tub to allow the suds to dissipate a bit. When CU first tested the new V12 GE, they showed a picture of the oversudsing that resulted from using a high sudsing detergent and warned that only low or controlled sudsing detergents be used in the newly redesigned machine.

We always used Dash in our GE. The few times we bought Cheer or Tide, I could get suds flowing down the front of the washer and onto the floor - just like Bobby Brady did, but with far less product.
Oh yes our 1956 once got
suds locked from Tide, my mother never bought it again, but we always used Cheer and never had a suds problem. She finally settled on Ivory Snow flakes.

Our family had a washer like that when we were at Holloman AFB in the very early 60's.Nice machine-so remember that shiney copper colored metal lint dish!
I hated that suds kill pause in our '56 GE. Thought it was so dumb!!!
