Family from West Hyattsville, MD. When our Metro Station was being renovated last summer, we had to catch a bus at the station and be driven to the Rhode Island Ave. Station to catch the Red Line into the city. We rode through Hyattsville and West Hyattsville where there is a Metro stop and there are many nice homes in formerly heavily Catholic neighborhoods--big churches-- and as soon as the civil rights and fair housing laws went into effect, the white flight began and people left those nice neighborhoods. A lot of those families probably bought their Maytags from Lanham Maytag where John worked with Bill and Bob who sold and serviced a lot of Maytags.

The sudden stop this washer suffered was probably due to a wire in the safety lid breaking or its connection to one of the switches breaking. Those could be troublesome things.

I have the original ad in a Better Homes & Gardens magazine. I don't remember the year, but seems like around '67 - '70. My mom subscribed to the magazine at various times, for a few years in the mid 50's, then from around '66 - '71, and lastly from the early 80's until her passing in '95.

I believe this ad is earlier than noted above.  I would say 1964 or 1965 probably, which would predate the introduction of Maytag's "New Generation" models.

Update:  Would you believe 1961?  I found several copies of this ad on eBay, each claiming a 1961 publication date, but this one includes a footer of Better Homes and Gardens October 1961.

I must be losing my mind! Everything about that ad looks early 60's, but I don't have any BH&G magazines from that time period. I now remember my mom took American Home and also purchased Woman's Day magazines at that time, so I must have seen it in one of them.
