Does anyone have an up-close and personal pic of a Norge washer that's similar to the one in today's POD?

The dial looks awful small, and from the pic, I can't see water level buttons, etc.

Dan, Norge washers didn't fare very well for the long haul in general. The pair shown here was either the last, or next to the last year, of the solid tub washers. We had the very first perforated dispensomat washer that came out in 1964. The knobs weren't all that small. Had enough room for teh cycle(s) needed. The program buttons did the rest. There is a vertical slide lever to the left of the timer knob, that could be the water level.

Wonder how well and how long it took for the Norge dryer to dry your hair with its hairdryer attachment?Sort of interesting.

"OMG" I saw the Picture with the Lady sitting in front of the Dryer, with a Hair Dryer Hood on her Head, but I hadn't checked out the reading of that part of the Ad. Does anyone know how the Hair Dryer Hood did attach to the Norge Dryer, to Dry Hair?

I know that my {Early 60s} Filter Queen Vacuum Cleaner shows an Attachment for the Blower part, to put on the end of the Flex Hose, to put a Soft-Plastic Hair Dryer Hood, to Dry Hair, similar to the Portable Hair Dryer set-up, that had the Flex Hose and Soft Hood, rather than the Hard Plastic Hoods.

Hair dryer attachments

I also thought some Rainbow vacs were available with a hair dryer attachment-Saw an ad for it saying something like-"dry your hair with water washed air!"Forget what model Rainbow it was.Don't see the attachment for current models.

My aunt had a very similar Norge washer, but it was not the top of the line with the program buttons above the dial. Hers had two small knobs to the left of the control dial, which were for three water temps and two speeds. Otherwise it looked the same as the machine in the ad. The cycle dial had two cycles, normal and short. It was a timed-fill machine and you could set a lower water level on the control dial. The control dial was transparent plastic with the cycle increments marked on it in black and with a lip around the edge to grip and turn...you turned the whole dial, not the little black pointer knob in the middle of it. It had an overflow rinse and a turquoise burp-up lint filter on a black agitator. She had a large family and was not gentle with it. Seems it lasted only about four years before she got a new Whirlpool.

and another thing about that machine....the lid did not open all the way. It opened to the back, but only about 3/4 of the way and then just hung in mid air.

I wonder how that hair dryer worked, especially on a gas dryer. Carbon monoxide dryed hair?

The hair dryer attached to the door opening, blowing air through the tube and into the bonnet that you put over your hairdo. Norge dryers blew air from the back to the front of the machine forcing air through the clothes instead of pulling air over the heat source and through the drum like all other airflow dryers. Since there was so much air pressure inside the drum, Norge dryers tended to be very linty in the room they were installed and if the owner's housekeeping skills were less than diligent, the entire room would end up looking like a flocked christmas tree after a few years!

Using the clothes dryer to dry one's hair sounds incredibly wasteful. And of course good for the local gas company's bank account in the short term. Interesting side-branch on the tree of history, but one that thankfully has not stuck around.

Using the output of a vacuum cleaner to dry hair sounds positively suicidal. In effect you're dousing your hair in dust mites and room bacteria. Even a water-filtered vac like the Rainbow; think of what grows in that container if you don't wash it out with bleach after every time you vacuum the house. It's one thing to exhaust that air into a room; but concentrating it into your hair, and thence directly into your nose and mouth... Holy cow, I can't think of a better way to get respiratory illnesses!

Not to mention the social element: "Madge, I like your new hairdo, but... how can I say this?, it makes you smell like a vacuum cleaner bag!"

My mom went to a garage sale in Kansas and found a big brown box that said rainbow on the side of it. She asked the lady and she indicated that it was her Mom's rainbow that she had gotten and then decided that she didn't like it so she never used it and it sat in the original box for over 15 years. The mother passed on and the daughter was selling the "crap". The price tag on it was $100 and Mom did the honrable thing and said, willl you take $50. The lady declined. So mom went on her way. That afternoon mom went back and offered $75. Mom knew that I had wanted a rainbow and when she got it home she never even really looked at it.

I went home for Christmas and I asked Mom if I could get the box out and play with it. She said Yep. So I started cleaning. Mom thought I was crazy. In the end, Mom decided that it was a decent vacuum!

I know this is off subject but if anyone can tell me the model, I'd appreciate it. The owner's manual says copyright 1985 and I'm guessing its a model C.

Vacuum cleaner hairdryer

Besides being "dirty" if the Rainbow water-dust container isn't cleaned-would be inefficeint because the air isn't heated by a heating element-the little heat from the motor would take a long time to dry.The same with the FQ hairdryer attachment-can't remember if the Kirby had such an attachment.If the Rainbow is used right-the dust-water container is to be emptied after each use and rinsed out.Also if you used the Rainbow dryer-the very slight evaporation of the Clean water(would put clean water in it while using the hairdyer)would slow the drying of the hair.I think these attachments are more of a "deal closer" that the salesman could use to try to close the deal("You can dry your hair with it!"to make the machine sound more useful-another thing it could do-whether it works is another matter.

Greg, bingo about Norge dryers being linty. Both the 1953 and 1964 dryers suffered that, particularly a bit of air seeping through the lower little panel that droped down to access the lint screen, which was huge. Yes, my mom ALWAYS kept the door to the laundry room closed when it was going--I hated it because I could only heaer muffled washer noise. And in the summer, going into that laundry room was like a steam room. And in the winter, nice and moist, but the windows fogged up. After a while, she started cracking the window next to the dryer, particularly on cooler days. And when she wasn't home and I was doing wash, I'd always leave the door into the breakkfast room open so I'd get tohear all the noises while watching tv or whatever. And of course, sometimes I'd hear a comment about leaving the door open cuz the den had so much dust on the furniture. Since I was barely 7 when we moved into that house, I now wonder what our old garage looked like with the dryer running in there--especially when the station wagon was parked in there too. Maybe all that created dust was why the cleaning lady came twice a week.

Rainbow vac doco

I have a similar manual.I also have the machine like it. Got as a trade in for a TriStar.Don't have the hairdryer part though.Think its a Rainbow D2 or D3.The scalp massager is just like the one that comes with the Kirby.Those have been included with kirbys for many model generations. don't know how long Rainbow has been providing the scalp massager attachment.And oh yes-I could agree-using the dryer to hairdry your hair would be a waste of gas or power-Imagine a 5000W hairdryer in the case of an electric dryer.The portable ones would draw less power and (1500w) and be more efficient.And no danger of lint in your hair-would think that could be a problem as well.
