While this is a great dishwasher it does not heat it's own water. Water temp of at least 140 has to be provided. I think Laundress mentioned that the hot water in his building is set lower in the summer months. It might be too low for proper cleaning. It's worth looking into, though, as these are great dishwashers.
Interesting to note that this machine has a heating element inside the tub for drying, and it also maintains water temp (but does not raise it). Only the built-in & portable Superbas had this feature as well.

Had my eye on a few KA portables of the same ilk (but not a top loader) but after reading the archives and learning these models do not heat water for washes was put right off.
During colder months of the year when the boilers are on for heating hot water is nearly instantaneous and >130F. However during warmer parts of the year and the thing is off best one can get is about 120F. Even then you'll need the taps to run if it is off hours so to speak.
Our hot water comes from a sidearm off the boiler which is sort of like a tankless system from what one understands. When there are long gaps in usage such as say late night it takes time (often some time) to purge the pipes of cold water and get the system to produce hot.
Have found *heated* hot washes are the key to "flash drying" with dishwashers; that is unless you intend to heat the rinses as well. With cooler rinse water you are just about locked into using a heated drying system to get the job done.

Hi Laundress, if you have the space for a full size portable and want a more vintage machine you should look for a Whirlpool Power Clean model that has the water heat option (approx 1980 and on). When this option is selected both the main wash & final rinse are heated to about 145 (+/- 5). You can start with water temps as low as 120 and still get great results. John L. can vouch for their cleaning ability....he uses one as his daily driver and is very pleased. I have a Kenmore version and really like it. Plus you'll never clean a filter again......honest!! : )

Utica is up past Albany easily > four hour drive I should think.

Also this unit is a 24" portable. Could possibly squeeze a 22" top loading portable into our galley kitchen to be near enough for use of the sink/taps, but 24" would not work.
This is how we ended up with the 18" Kenmore (rebadged Frigidaire) in the first place.
